  • This was a weekend ride:

    http://thepedalclub.org/events/seven-valleys-torcy-france-2018/

just not this weekend. I hope looking at this on a gloomy winter evening may have a cheering effect.

If people are interested I would be prepared to organise (for next Spring) a forum weekend like this Pedal Club event - as I've said in my report it is an excellent area for riding, conveniently close to Calais. Accomodation is not expensive.

While you're on the Pedal Club website do have a look round - I think you will find the 'Golden Book' entries interesting.

Naturally, anything planned for 2019 has to assume that brexit will not be completely disastrous.

Let me know what you think.

  • Colour me interested.
Ernulf de Hesdin was a pal of Guillaume Bâtard. For aiding the invasion of Saxon England he was given a tract of land that included an oak forest and a verdant river valley where the river meadows were fertilised with the silt deposited by the flooding each Winter.
Fast forward not quite a thousand years and the woodland is still there!
Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve is the 2nd largest in London, (after Richmond Park), and the River Pinn has had houses built on (some) of its meadows.
No wonder they are at the risk of flooding!

Did visit Hesdin a long time ago, back when channel crossing trips were subject to a 50L limit on beer/lager. Would be good to cycle to/through it.

@hamrack knows the area as well.

  • Saturday was sunny and quite warm.

So I spent most of my riding time indoors at the UCI velodrome in Aigle.

Sunday was cold, wet and foggy.

So I took myself off and did hill reps at altitude, and had to spend half an hour in a warm bath afterwards defrosting bits of myself.

  • @clubman.

Had a gander through this web site and the Pedal Club Golden Book.

The entry for Ian Steel had me laughing out loud, so much so, I was told to pipe down by SWMBO who was watching some durge on the idiot box.
    My highlight in italics below.

After a two-day journey, the cyclists arrived in Warsaw, where they were greeted by Marshall Rokossovsky, the commander of the Soviet forces in Poland, who stood sternly behind his desk, knocking back glasses of vodka. Not knowing what they should say, one team member suggested they should simply say “bollocks”. “We said ‘bollocks’, with military precision to the most dangerous man in Poland,” Steel recalled.

  • Looks familiar that view. Somewhere close to Dent de Lys?

  • Two weekends back, Giro Della Donna. Never been as cold after a ride. The descent was like 25k long and considering we're going into Aussie summer, the 6 degs on the foggy top of Donna Buang didn't really help. Instant clattering teeth and loss of all sensations in the fingers and whatnot.

The ride itself was really awesome, going through this beautiful temperate rain forest with massive ferns all around. At some point Alberto Contador came zooming past and shouted encouragements. I managed to ride well until I punctured out 6 k from the last summit.
From there on it was a proper battle to keep riding into the rainy mist but I got there in the end.

Cycling tips people took a shot of you at the summit, so here's mine, minus my usual glasses because they just fogged up so bad I couldn't see through them.
Unfortunately I myself have not taken any good pic apart from a shot from the balcony the next day that shoes the summit.

The second one, pretty close, yep. It's on the road down to Blonay from Les Pleiades, above Vevey.

  • Lucky man. Next time I'll visit my relatives down there I'll bring a bike.

  • A river crossing in the lanes east of Bristol. Got a wet foot but excellent ride otherwise. Mudguards so good!

  • Yeah, it was cold today. Wahoo said -1 deg. I tried to take my gloves off using my teeth until I realised I was biting my finger as well. Couldn’t feel a thing.

  • ive made it another 8 miles now in my dads pub trying to convince my wife to pick me up

  • Set off to ride to the in-laws at half one yesterday afternoon. Arrived just after 10 this morning. No stops except to buy provisions and have a quick pint before the Humber Bridge.

  • Very impressive

  • Whoah, that's a big ride. Large amounts of kudos to you.

  • First time possibly-ever riding a bmx.

Got it free at the scrapyard yesterday, needs new tyres where one is skidded through.

Slightly too small frame, but weird standing all the way 5 miles. Felt great after a while. Couldn’t get new tyres today so risked it back too. Ride home from town began to feel natural.

Got 10ft from the front door, heard a firework going off and a fizz against my leg. Tube blew in the rear tyre.

    7/10 still better than traffic.

  • Hell yea. Awesome.

  • Top tip - the North York Moors, crossed in December between 4am and 6.30am, are rather nippy.

  • Bailed in the middle of turbo and went to the park instead. Saw Santa in an Uber. Preferred his sleigh.

  • First century today.

Nothing to most on here but I’m still quite chuffed.
