Anyone got a view on the SON deluxe Vs 28 discussion?
I think I need 12mm thru axle + Centrelock, ideally convertible to QR so I can switch it between bikes - sjs seem to have both 28s and delux available for the same price, but dunno which is better...

I got the delux but only coz of the 24h version. I believe the 28 has a more regular output at lower speeds?
I'm getting a QR adapter via Hunt for my (as yet unbuilt) wheel, in case that's helpful.

Yeah that is helpful; I don't aim to do that much at lower speed so maybe the delux is better?
Qr adapter availability is good to know too, cheers!

I’m looking for a one wheel set to do everything including Dynamo to go on my Canyon Ultimate Disc.
Both current options aren’t dissimilar in price.
Hunt do the 30mm carbon with Dynamo.
Also looking at Hope 40mm as apparently you can buy just the rim.Any other suggestions for lightweight slightly aero...?

@cycleclinic does a good line...

@Alan_tbt the Spanninga Nomad is a front light with a USB output for charging things, I've not seen one but always thought they looked like a good solution.
Actually I've just looked and it says they're for e-bikes but accept a 3-36v power source. I think this means it should work with a dynamo - does anyone know what makes a dynamo light e-bike specific?

For a dynamo hub for a fast tourer/bike-packing/ultracycling bike do I want a Son Delux or the 28? For lighting at night and USB power bank charging during the day.

I know this is several weeks after we mentioned it but my friend spoke to Pacenti and they've confirmed that the only SL25 rims you'll find now are deadstock and they have none left at all. Sorry for the bad news but hope it helps if only to confirm getting a Kinlin!

Speak to JRA. They found me a Pacenti SL25 a few weeks ago.

The SONdelux is designed to give the same output for higher wheel RPM, so it depends if you're going to be able to keep the speed up. For ultra stuff I would have thought you don't want to lose lights when you get tired/are dragging your sorry self up a hill at 2am in the rain, so the SON28 is maybe a better idea.
Edit: here's a link to the Schmidt website where they discuss this (in german, sorry). -

Ta, will do.
Also I think someone else mentioned this upthread and I'd completely forgotten, so thanks to you too!

Which options are out there for 15mm thru axle dynamo hubs? Sp and SON?
-
• #1339
If it's centre lock you want, don't think Son do one but they do have 6 bolt in 15mm.
SP do both. -
• #1340
6 bolt is my fav. Thanks.
-
• #1341
FWIW, I've only got 3000km on my 15mm SP dynamo but super impressed with it.

• #1342
I have the QR on my rando. It is great so far :-)
-
• #1343
I also have a 15mm thru axle SP hub. Very pleased with it so far!

Interesting page and graphs, thanks. It looks as though the additional drag from the 28 over the delux is minimal, normally less than a watt, and apparently the weight difference is a rather irrelevant 22 grams. I think you're right - 28 it is.
So, who's got a SON 28 12 Centerlock in 32 holes hanging around doing nothing? In black.

Are the 1.5V Shimano hubs (ie the £45 T785 that Spa Cycles are selling) any good? Front and rear lights only, no USB charging.
-
• #1346
Interested to hear this as well; the consensus elsewhere seemed to be that they'd be fine for about-town/commuter use, but would be unlikely to give full brightness for higher-powered lights (60+ lux).

I was emailing John from SPA cycles about dynamos a while back and he had this to say, FWIW;
“Shimano dynohubs were proven to be good in the past, with few failures. What failures we had were due to the cones wearing out. Only one side was replaceable, despite the hubs being serviceable which SON and SP are not. Can't comment on the durability of current Shimano dynohubs since we've only sold a small anount in comparason to SP and SON. I would say we've had a 1% failure rate with SP, but some of these have been after the 2 year warranty, but we have nevertheless underwrote the warranty.
SP hubs should last for 20,000km+ and guaranteed for 2 years. SON for 50.000km plus and guaranteed 5yrs.
For what it's worth, I've got a Kinlin XR26T built into a XT 785 (1.5w) centrelock on my bike, because I think it rolls much easier than any other dynohub 9noticed and commented on by the wheelbuilders), except possibly the SON Deluxe. I could've had either, but like the idea that the XT is servicable and I only use headlights.”

Enlightening, thank you!

My dynamo hub is one of these & I've had no problems with it. Ridden about three & a half thousand miles on it myself, not sure what mileage before I had it but I imagine at least the same again (bought the bike second-hand with dynamo hub & it had toured Europe on the current T785).

Caught out one too many times with battery lights, I'm going dynamo.
So:
- DH-3D37 - QR, 3W, centre-lock (I'd prefer 6-bolt but I ain't willing to pay for SON or SP or whatever), 36h, €25
- I'll get a rim for like £5 - rim brake so I have both options
- spokes, call that another £5
- lights, I was looking at something like an AXA Blueline 50 as recommended in this thread (or the dynamo lights one). Will it explode if I ride for hours in the rain? Is 50 lux enough for just riding around town incl. unlit roads etc.?
- No idea what sort of light I need on the rear, help? They're pretty cheap at least
- if I could do USB charging that would be extremely useful. Do I just buy a light with USB, or buy something that goes inline between the front light and dynamo?
- what other stuff do I need to buy? I assume there's about 50 little connecting twats that I need to buy as well?
All in it's going to cost £100 (?) just so blind road users don't kill me and thieves don't steal my shit :(
- DH-3D37 - QR, 3W, centre-lock (I'd prefer 6-bolt but I ain't willing to pay for SON or SP or whatever), 36h, €25
This is my plan. But only going to use the dynamo to charge a pass-through enabled battery pack. I’ll charge usb lights, phone, garmin etc from the pack as required.
