  • As long as it's a Seiko

  • I feel like either I didn't explain myself properly or you're all missing the point.

Of course, everyone here doesn't feel like that, I don't raise anyone who has something I don't on a pedestal, nor do I think anyone on here does. Even more so with bikes, to an extent, some high budget builds are appreciated and the owner commended on choices, but people who just open a catalogue, get a shop to build, and write a cheque, are mostly laughed at for their terrible style and lack of knowledge.

However, out there, in the real world, away from from the bike nerds we associate with, away from the watch nerds some of the posters on here associate with, away from the car nerds I associate with, we fraternise with normal people and also, people who have an interest, but their interest is purely as status.

These are the people I refer to, the people in Instagram comments, the people chatting shit in the bar after work about buying their first Rolex, or the sort of people who don't know the model but know it was the most expensive one in the shop. There's far more of them than people like us. Or maybe I just live my life in a bubble of fucking idiots.

  • I disagree.

You think that. I think that.

However, for most people out there, success is bought.

  • I'm not convinced. For the vast majority of people luxury watch = Rolex. Doesn't really even matter which.

There's a tiny subset such as those in Instagram comments but their presence is probably hugely magnified by social media. For instance, I don't do instagram or twitter so haven't really seen anything like that.

  • Thanks to having learnt more about watches on this thread, when a consultant turned up at my office to ‘fix’ things wearing a £10k watch, I felt pretty convinced that we weren’t getting value for money.

Surprise surprise - we did very little of what they recommended because they didn’t understand our business. And we paid them too much money for the work.

I like automatic watches, and I appreciate the good ones cost more - but after a certain point they seem like a signifier for how much cash you have. All the high-ranking officials from dodgy countries that I meet seem have stupidly expensive watches - unless they actually know what they’re talking about, in which case they have nice but not extravagant watches. Sometimes even classic digitals that aren’t worth much but indicate a certain appreciation for good technology. When, for example, I’ve met officials from state-owned energy producers in resource-rich countries, the political guys are all flashing £10k-plus skeletonised or overbuilt wrist jewellery, while the analysts and hard-nosed evidence-based decision-makers who I really want to talk to might have a nice, simple pilot or diver or a Casio digital. Or no watch at all because their phone does it.

  • Yes of course, but until you're in the position where you're fucking minted, I think it's unfair to chastise others for spending large sums on watches. Who cares if they know what the movement is? If they want to be stupid enough to spend £100+k on a Richard Mille, let them.

To the same extent, why own a car better than a Ford Fiesta? They all do the same thing. Why buy nice clothes? Why go to nice restaurants? yada yada yada.

  • I wouldn’t worry about that side of watches/cars/life, people are shallow.
I have to keep myself in check that I’m not getting spoon fed the same bullshit though, damn you Hodinkee.

  • I always thought rich knobheads wore gash watches out of altruistism, so the rest of us can judge them.

  • Haha - so much this

Worn and wound + Hodinkee IG accounts = a personal battle to not just like all of it 😂

  • My wife does not like watches. She’s never worn one, doesn’t want to. Every week I say “but what about this one?”, nope, fuck off with your watch obsession...
Then this week I showed this 31mm Tudor sub and she actually said “that one’s alright” which is code that she wants it for her 40th birthday right?!

  • Lucky girl... 🙂

  • Loving that dinky Sub.

  • Those strap links with their rolled sides on view are grim.

  • Period features :P

It’s a bit over budget, I know she’d scuff it and would prefer a jazzy handbag. But then I imagine her wearing it and get the horn.

  • Almost nobody did solid end links in that era.

  • Those small Tudor subs always were a favourite of mine. And it says princess.

  • Didn’t spot the Princess, that is cool.

  • I’m not sure - unless she really wants it might she not prefer a celine bag or something special like that? I bought a JLC tank for the missus and she doesn’t wear it, just wear her DJ. Both I bought for her but one was a surprise and the other she picked.

    Just my two pence

  • Squale today.

that's a horrible thing to call your wife...

  • You’re totally right, put simply it’s not something she wants. Money no object I’d buy it and wait for her to see the horological light but I don’t have the disposable for that right now. I just wish it wasn’t another feckin handbag... #hypocrite

    @BRM she’s called me worse.

Was hoping a parcel would come today for show and tell but no joy so same old Sinn.

@TGR I know you broke the screen on your last Apple Watch but that case is horrific pal!

  • Find me a nicer bullet proof one. I did look. I don’t like it at all but after the previous incident, needs must.
