  • dis gon be gud

  • So good. -17 stem please!

  • Agreed, that stem I had in the shed.

So stem length for a TT bike to get into a ball park good position - 70/80cm? I presume it has to be short as the extensions are long, also you're roughly wanting your shoulder to elbow vertical when forearms are on the rests?

Fear this is a can of worms after browsing the internet with people calling eachother out for being clueless/triathletes etc

  • Well done on the fork find, especially with that much steerer - I couldn’t safely use mine and had to sell to @Lukas :(

Ugh...so I have to go back to TTF for an Oval fork bargain then?

  • Let me know when f you want a cheap stem for testing - can send an 80mm one gratis if you can cover P&P

  • also you're roughly wanting your shoulder to elbow vertical when forearms are on the rests?

Good for control, not necessarily the hot tip for aeros.

  • Not sure I got a bargain, will probably end up paying around £100 for the fork. Agreed about the long steerer, pretty lucky.

Very kind, is the stem 17°/-17°?

  • Thanks for the info, have seen a lot of images of riders with non vertical biceps. Thought I'd atleast attempt to nail down the basics before probably being called a triathlete.

  • before probably being called a triathlete

Keep the saddle nose behind the BB and you should be safe. Try to avoid looking like this:

  • Might have a silver -17 nitto ahead stem in parts bin, will have a look

  • I saw that over on TTF, and noted about saddle nose behind the BB. Cheers!

  • Also got stems if you need; couple of adjustables (95 & 110mm) to lend for the cost of postage.
£100 for the fork with that length of steerer is a good deal IMO.
@Pifko Coincidentally, was rebuilding (and polishing) that bike (and fork) yesterday before reading this.

  • Bought a 17° 80cm stem from Planet X last night as it was cheap enough, should hopefully get me in roughly the right position. Thanks very much for the offer. Looks as though bars might be delivered today which will mean I'm almost there barring a rear mech.

  • Bought a 17° 80cm stem

    Trying the Superman position?

  • Trying the Superman position?

I thought a horizontal 70/80cm was a good ball-park stem length? Please help me. If I do get any issues with the BB then might resort to cannibalising the Hotpoint.

  • Yup, you’re going to have to budget for a chin rest...

  • Had a few hours this afternoon so made some progress, after realising the whole cable outer needs inserting into the basebars it was much easier. Things to do is sort the half-inevitable slipping steerer bung, trim steerer, rear brake pads and long enough gear cable.

I think I'd leave it, in case you want to sell it later. 15mm poking out of the top of the stem isn't really doing any harm. One of my caps and matching spacers would look nicer, obvs.

  • My thinking too regarding the steerer, although slammed would look great. Already have a one of your caps in my spares box, might get it on when I sort the bung issue out as a finishing touch.

  • Rad!

    Thanks :)
