Tinnitus?

  • You should be aware that he's a grown man(possibly partially educated) so your advice really does go with out saying.

I have mild tinnitus(can hear it at night going to bed and in quiet situations when I make myself conscious of it), disappointing/ annoying considering my age but hey, another thing to add to my growing list of ailments. There's a lecturer in the School of Media in the college I'm in who wanders around in headphones the whole time to detract from his severe tinnitus. Bad times.

I wonder what smoking a doob would do for it Eightball?

Without wishing to alarm you, that is how mine started. It is now you should be working on your coping strategies.

Mine is getting louder but my early methods of dealing are still working - mostly. Being busy / distracted is still the best medicine.

It would be interesting to hear if marijuana has any effect, although out for me due random screening. Alcohol works but only in liver affecting quantities.

  • ^ can't do it, random droog testing at work and they mean it, maaan........
What's your line of business, Eightball? (If you can say.)

  • IT for offshore survey company in oil and gas sector - all medicals needed for survival training include drug and alcohol testing - they also can a) randomly test at work and b) upon joining a vessel/rig/platform and any time whilst on it

I've known two people be here on a Friday and not come back on the Monday!

  • Was it a bank holiday weekend?

  • ^ very good!

It was 'garden leave' I think (until their 'meeting with HR')

  • had an appointment with NHS audiology dept a couple of weeks back which showed very slight hearing loss in left ear (the one I 'perceive' tinnitus with) which he said may account for an increased awareness of something that is always there in the background. Due to only mainly perception of it one ear (to rule out it being anything else causing it) he made an appointment for an MRI scan which I had the other night - not my favorite experience ever! So waiting on results

Anyone have any experience with using cordyceps fungi? Heard it mentioned recently...

  • Never heard of cordyceps fungi, looks pretty horrible.

Unilateral tinnitus is almost always not noise-induced, unless your other ear is already seriously damages or deformed already.

Hearing loss and tinnitus in one ear could be quite a few things, but they are probably scanning for nerve defects or Ménière's Disease. If you haven't been suffering from vertigo as well, it's probably not that though. Loads of different medications have been known to cause tinnitus, but beings so subjective and capricious it's hard to say what exactly causes it in most cases. Quinnine, drinking and other sinus problems are some of the most common causes though. Do a seach for ototoxic drugs and see if there's anything you take regularly which could be contributing.

There are some therapies for tinnitus, but no cure if it gets really bad unfortunately. Tinnitus retraining therapy is mostly distraction techniques. White noise can help mask it sometimes. You can even get pillows with built in speakers that play white noise to help you sleep.

  • thanks - I'm using white noise generator app (actually pink and brown noise are best for me) for sleeping - apparently the trick is to use them at much lower volume/frequency to your tinnitus, so the brain has to focus on the lower one thus masking the tinnitus

    allegedly

  • Been reading around a little. My goodness there are some scams.

One interests me, in a white noise situation remove the frequency that your tinnitus is at so it all blends.

    Hocus Pocus?

  • MRI scan came back clear, so looks like it's just.......er........tinnitus!

  • Start boshing the MDMA.

  • 45 next week

  • Learn to live with like I have for over 20 years,

    Nice support message

    /sarcasm

  • Compo? Ever worked in a noisy employment before 1990 and wasn't given hearing protection?

  • Nearest thread I could find to what I want to ask; anybody used a hearing aid before? What are they like?

  • fucking shitty fucking tinnitus

anyone heard of any updates on anything? anyone tried notch therapy apps, found any that work?

I might just get a hearing aid and be done with it

    Meh

  • Are you sure it's tinnitus?

I've had a ringing ear which I had self diagnosed myself with tinnitus. Then went to see an ENT specialist surgeon who has diagnosed me with a Cholesteatoma which requires surgery to remove as it gets progressively worse.

It would be worth paying to see a private Dr to rule out such things.

  • I'm pretty sure...although I won't rule that out

    That looks.....f-ing nasty

I'm waiting on NHS referral for hearing aids presently......

  • I bought Bose Sleepbuds recently. Not for tinnitus but a few reviews have mentioned they may help a little

  • I bought Bose Sleepbuds recently. Not for tinnitus but a few reviews have mentioned they may help a little

    spendy though?

  • £200

I got them because I live on a noisy road. Decided if I spend a third of my life asleep then £200 to improve that is cheap if it helps.

Not sure if it helps yet, but they're only a couple of weeks old

  • where were they £200 if you don't mind me asking? Amazon has them at £229.95

  • Was Amazon too, guessing a marketplace seller. Can't see them for that anymore.

The only thing I don't like about them is they're not perfectly shaped for my ears. I find half the time I'll have taken them out in the night.
But they definitely do the job of masking road noise. Can't hear a thing and I'm not turning it up loud to drown things out, it just seems the combination of the physical barrier and low volume white(ish) noise is enough to mask it

  • cheers

Have a look at Flare Audio earfoams - they sell replacement ones and they seem to fit a lot of other devices too?
