just before sunrise and just after sunset are the worst times usually... even flashing rear lights can be hard to see. At night unless there's loads of traffic and they get lost in the visual clutter, they're not that hard to see. In the countryside with no other real lights, should be easy to see a flashing light if you're paying attention.
Of course, the articles indicate this guy was staring at a truck that wasn't in the right place or some such rather than paying attention to what was in front of him. Pre-dawn light + not too much attention... well...

It does sound as if it'll be an unfair inquest. Poor Anna.
The driver would have had his headlights on, so the first question to ask is why he didn't see Mike in his headlights.
Also, if Mike was riding in the verge (is that Australian for 'hard shoulder'?), what was the driver doing there, too?

Whomever coined the term "Hunger Games on wheels" needs a kick in the arse. It somehow makes out that people are expected to die during the event rather than realising deaths in ultra-events are just a microcosm of those cyclists experience all the time
@Oliver Schick - They said there was a metre between the road and the barrier where Mike was riding. So presumably they are saying that the driver was on the shoulder. Looking at Google maps down there, there's a shoulder but I've no idea how long that continues for etc.

Can't help but feel like the inquest deserves it's own thread????
Also, has anyone outside of the UK recieved their copy of the tcr newspaper yet?

As someone on FB said, it looks like they took Jesse's words out of context:
"It's almost like The Hunger Games on wheels," organiser Jesse Carlsson says. "Riding is only one part of the puzzle.

It continues all the way.
Pretty much all the main roads that IndyPac went on have a hard shoulder like that. Normally the surface is fine -

This is a more balanced overview of what happened on the first day of the inquest: https://cycle.org.au/index.php/articles/mike-hall-inquest

The cycle.org.au page has been updated for yesterday. The inquest finished today (Wednesday) but the coroner's report and findings will not come out until next year.
While the police investigation seems to have been superficial and incompetent the coroner's inquiry appears to be far more thorough than anything we see in the UK. It is led by a highly qualified, experienced magistrate. She has spent three days hearing evidence and cross examination. Over here an overstretched, understaffed coroner's service would only spend about three hours in court.
There is a parallel discussion in the Rider Down thread :

What did you catch yourself doing wrong to merit the penalty?

I emailed them after I rode through what I think was one of the banned tunnels instead of taking the gravel alt track. It was late, roads were empty, I was doing 70kph and was through the tunnel before I even twigged about the bans.
The annoying thing was I'd got myself into a proper tiz rerouting manually on the same road earlier in the day thinking the busy tunnels were banned and they were not, it was the ones later on, one of which I zipped through with not a care in the world. -

Still 88th. Quite happy with that and the fact I didn't get any penalties because riding a clean race was one of my goals. Bit surprised I only lost 6 places between CP3 and CP4 because that's where I had my mental breakdown (and a day of only 130km).

Stoking the rad in Albania is banned.

But stoking the unstokable believe of being banned to stoke the rad Albania is still a stoke.
