  • r will be constant; r = 20.

    h however will increase 1 x by each circle (n); hence h = 5*n

    I.e. The first d will be d1 = (20^2-(5x1)^2)^(1/2)

    Second one, d2 = (20^2-(5x2)^2)^(1/2)

Solve that and you'll get your disc radius, d for n, n+1 ...

  • thanks both of you. now to make a hemisphere.

  • Made it too easy for you eh? ;)

Based on your sketch, should there not be 10 layers? And out of curiosity, what are you making?

  • If the top of each layer intersects the (hemi-) sphere, the top plank has zero radius. It could just be a vertical spike or something.

Making the intercept at the centre of each layer, as for the planks in the 2-dimensional version, would give you a non-infinitesimal top layer.

  • my error, cell A5 should be 0.

making some variation on the below. Also some coat hooks which will have 'ball' ends.

  • That also works: it just means you're looking at where the bottom surface of each layer touches the sphere, instead of the top surface.

  • That's the correct approach if you want to sand it down to a hemisphere, I think.

@moocher Slightly jealous of the workspace that you clearly have, I'd love to be able to do stuff like that once in a while.

  • Do we have a thread for commuter jacket recommendations? It's probably not a good fit for "stylish cycling kit"...

  • Hilltrek Greenspot remake is a decent compromise between water resistance and comfort.

  • The past few days I've had a note through my door (on official looking headed paper) saying I've been selected by the office of national statistics to take part in one of their surveys.

I had someone call at my door this evening (laminated pass and whatnot) saying that they were from the ONS and wanted to interview me. I said it wasn't convenient (I was eating my tea) and they said we could do it by phone tomorrow.

It seems kosher but obviously a bit wary of giving out personal info. Any thoughts?

  • Try the “ultimate riding jacket” thread:

    https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/156595/

  • Any thoughts?

Tell them you're not interested in taking part; ONS surveys are voluntary. I was considerably less polite than that when they asked me, but it's up to you how nicely you want to decline. The important thing is that everybody should refuse to give information to the government, they only ever use it to accrete power to themselves and thereby steal it from you.

  • Logically therefore should you not have the interview but tell ridiculous lies, convincingly?

  • It seems kosher but obviously a bit wary of giving out personal info. Any thoughts?

It's a real PITA. It's not just once - they'll want to ask you hours of pointless questions once a quarter for at least a year.

  • Any thoughts?

Tell them to go fuck themselves?

  • ^this

And ask if they can pass on the same message to the TV licensing people as well

  • I'm not 100% opposed to giving the information. I use ONS stats reasonably regularly so it would be a bit hypocritical to refuse to contribute (although if it takes more than 15 minutes I probably can't be arsed). It's more about confirming that they are the ONS.

  • fyi - for those who helped on the last page.

  • Nice! That should work out pretty well I think, the challenging thing will probably be getting the dome shape right on the top disc when sanding it down. Out of curiosity, what software is this?

  • Wouldn't it be easier to bind all the sheets together, then core 50mm cylinders and then turn it in a lathe, or are these calculations part of the aforementioned process?

  • Fusion 360 by the look of the screen shot

  • yes, fusion 360.

@coventry_eagle - i'm not lathe proficient unfortunately, although would be relatively easy i suspect

  • Ah I see. Why not try both of you have access to a lathe?

Love the nicely stacked Tetris like blocks in the background of the initial post and yeah the burnt edges of laser cut wood!

All the best man and yeah keep us updated on the progress!

  • I did it last year coz they gave me something like 20 quid to spend on Amazon. Win
