  • Ah right. I did spend a few minutes trying to find the tech sheet for those speakers but was not successful.

As danb has suggested, room placement can make a big difference. Depending on if / how the speakers are ported, moving towards or away from the wall can increase bass perception. Worth experimenting with.

I'm not familiar with the Cyrus amp you have; I did have a Cyrus 2 at one point, that was a good amp.

In general, dynamic headroom is always good. The idea of using a separate power amp has merit, however it's difficult to know if that will fill in the bass you feel is missing, as there are lots of possible causes.

  • If in doubt, apply more watts.

  • Thanks, I’ll have a go at placement. They’re 6.5” driver 3 way speakers so I should be able to get more from them than I am. Currently 10cm from the walls and slightly angled in but rear port is open. The amp circuitry is basically the same as the Cyrus 6a I think (which is the follow on generation of the Cyrus 2?)

  • Nice setup.

If in doubt, apply more watts.

    That’s exactly what I’m thinking

  • What are the room dimensions like? Have you tried shutting the doors (s)

  • Are you in London?

If so, you could borrow the mono blocs for an afternoon to see what difference some more current could make.

  • @ChasnotRobert that's incredibly kind - unfortunately not, I'm on the south coast

    @danb 6.3m x 4.6m, so I guess they're more like 4m apart, 4m from the listening position

  • If in doubt, apply more driver area.

  • For the first time in ages, I’ve got everything singing. I should be happy.

I am trying to justify bigger Tannoys with man maths. I think space (and the enemy) might be the killer

  • Then my amp will be even more underpowered :(

  • Have you got them bi-wired?

  • no, the current amp won't support it. I'll need to buy a power amp in order to bi-amp / bi-wire them

  • ...and they are def wired correctly? ie not into the hf without jumpers

  • yup, wired in to the LF with jumpers :)

  • If in doubt, apply more driver area.

    Yep, that as well.

Which Tannoys are you thinking of? 15" Golds?

  • Seen these?
Not my bag but very innovative/huge bass from small units:
    4500w!!!

  • 12" HPD
    They won't fit though.

  • Ok, moved the speakers around a little and a significant improvement. I do still need to think about how I can drive a few more watts through them but am very happy with the change. Considering that audio normally means marginal improvements are eye-wateringly expensive, I’m very happy to have a free sound upgrade. Bigly thanks @danb @ChasnotRobert @BRM

  • Why not an independent sub?
