Epic WTF

In the future, should someone wish to become a core developer of SQLite and is in every way qualified except that he or she does not feel comfortable with some details of this rule (for example, the overtly religious elements), then appropriate adjustments can be made at that point. The objective of the rule is not to impose a particular religious creed, but rather to use time-tested behavioral guidelines to promote a productive and peaceful community.

1. The Rule

I know it's going to be a controversial view, but overall it seems like a pretty solid list. Obviously, the whole laughing thing makes life a bit boring.

As an nihilist atheist I wouldn't expect others to "proclaim that you believe the universe came into being by chance" the implied claim in such lists that religion is needed for morality is BS. And screw that.

I know it's going to be a controversial view, but overall it seems like a pretty solid list. Obviously, the whole laughing thing makes life a bit boring.

Mmm. No. It might be arguably fine as a "rules to live by" list, but it's not a good code of conduct for an open source software project because it doesn't do anything to protect contributors from hateful behaviour or discrimination.

Normal codes of conduct written by normal people are very precise about what is and isn't permitted because if you have vague stuff like "guard your tongue against evil and depraved speech" then people will suck up months of your time with bad-faith rules lawyering about the definitions of "evil" and "depraved".

But hey, the guy says that in 18 years only one person who contributes to the project has ever done or said anything unpleasant to anybody else, so I guess it's fine. He also refuses to use git, so I expect that the high barrier to entry for the project means that there will be far fewer contributors than there are compared to other projects, so his project is less likely to be exposed to the types of people who contribute to complete trash fires like this one.

But I'd have thought "hateful behavior" is at least as ambiguous, and that; "Guard your tongue against evil and depraved speech" does cover hateful behavior, in the same way "love your neighbor as yourself" covers discrimination.

You would think that, but the people for whom codes of conduct are written are right pricks, you know? I think that's something that people tend to forget - if you're a reasonable, normal person, who is acting in good faith, the code of conduct isn't really for you, it's for the dickheads who are behaving horribly in the first place.

Having your own wooly rules based on some cute idea you came up with means that those dickheads will have a fantastic time figuring out the best ways to weasel around them. He could have adopted the Contributor Covenant, like everyone else of note, but he's convinced that some old dead guy knows more about managing people in open source development than the people who work on this stuff for a living today. I think he's just been protected from the industry at large by his oddball approach to development.

The rules I try to follow are very simple.

1, try not to be a cunt, in words or deeds.
2, see the first rule, cunty.

3, realise that you are always an asshole for some random person, so don't think you are the shit
4, haters are also gonna hate

It is quite possible to be a bit religious & eccentric and be perfectly pleasant to others and not go full DUP on people.

Just find it strange and (not intentional perse) non inclusive to use such religious terms for a software developer project code of conduct... doesn't mean he meant harm.

I once tried to cite a guy who had a really comprehensive list of brown dwarfs (they're things in space similar to Jupiter for those who don't know). He turned out to be a full-blown American hard right Baptist dude and also had a load of statistical data on abortion and climate change denial on his website, so my supervisor told me off and I ended up having to reference something else. Christian nutter dude had the best data though and I had to spend hours basically recreating his table

I used to work at a children’s publishers (as a designer). I worked on a dinosaur book that I found a great illustrator for - who turned out to be basically a creationist.

Imagine the fun I had, trying to make a dinosaur book with someone who refused to draw anything that conflicted with his beliefs of a young earth.

Surely information should prioritise sources?

If you value the source over the facts then it gets dangerous...the decision to in invade Iraq was based on bad information from a whole load of “credible” sources

He didn't collect any of the data himself. It's just collated from various papers. He just did some of the legwork that would have saved me time.

Referencing a random website is a pretty bad idea anyway.

I would imagine his abortion data -might- be suffering from interpretation/selection bias and scrutinize that a lot more.

But would not instantly dismiss his brown dwarf data because he's of the "hard right force his religious laws upon others" variety.

Saw that, it's more that it's not a traditional academic source/website, not that it's 4chan specifically. Various parts of academia can be very insular.
