Snowboarding

  • Right, the wife and I have a surprise week of holiday for the last week of March. Any good places likely to have snow for decent snowboarding that late in the season? Talking big long reds/blacks and off-piste, if at all possible. I'm too old for parks.

  • Assuming Europe, Val Thorens is a safe bet for late season. If the snow is going you are up high and have the glacier, and if the snow is still good there's the whole Three (four!) valleys to play with. My neighbours have an apartment there and usually go late season because it's rented out in the high season.

This was VT in the first week of April last year (mute the sound)

  • Someone asking pretty much the same question at the snowheads forum : http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=136648

  • Cheers both. Looks like Tignes or Val Thorens might be ideal. I’ve been to Aviriaz a few times now and was at Mayrhofen last year.

Never boarded in Italy. Any good?

  • That right there is the best feeling in the world!

  • anyone been Obertauern?

heading there tomorrow on a whim, hope it is good

  • ^ so good!

  • Has anybody ridden in Zakopane Poland? I might have a hook up there, but the slopes don't look too amazing from my googling...

  • Anyone after some Forum Peter Line boots? I've got some that I wore for a week away and not since... good condition, they were pretty much the best you could buy! PM if you're interested

  • Might want to mention size and price?

  • Has anyone here been boarding in California? Me and a few mates had booked with Virgin holidays to go to Heavenly in February but they fucked up the booking and have now refunded us. Still looking to go to somewhere in California, possibly still heavenly, anyone have any insights? We are going to book flights (into San Francisco) and a hire car and then get an airBnB.

Amazingly it looks like we can go to the states for the same price it cost to go to alpe d’huez last season.

  • a hire car

Hire a 4x4 otherwise you have often have to faff with snow chains on the drive up there.

I used to go skiing at Heavenly all the time when I lived in SF, but that was 15+ years ago. CA side was relatively boring (no smoking, drinking and skiing frowned upon, etc) whilst the NV side was a free-for-all.

  • So no convertible mustangs then?

Ok, cheers. Do you think Heavenly is the best resort in the Lake Tahoe area? Most of the others look pretty small and the only other option I’ve come up with is Mammoth but the drive from SF is almost twice as long.

I’ve looked on street view at some airBnB’s and there really doesn’t seem to be much going on in Heavenly at all. Need to decide if we are going to stay somewhere with no nightlife but close to the slopes or down near the NV side and then have to get a shuttle or something every day to the lifts

  • We used to go for long weekends (leave SF Friday evening, aim to go home Sunday evening).

Used to drive towards Reno at the end of the day and stay in a cheap motel and use casinos for evening entertainment. Wouldn't want to do that for a week though!

Only really went to Heavenly, did go to one or two others I think but nothing sticks in my memory (and it was a long time ago).

  • Did a tidy at home, and came across some boots I forgot I had -
Anyone interested in some Salomon F22 in a Mondo 28cm (~EUR44 in a Giro cycling shoe)?

Or any suggestions on where I could post them (other than eBay) so they'd get into the hands of someone that would use them?

  • Just back from two weeks boarding in Morzine and Serre Chevalier. Mostly guided offpiste, including a day in La Grave and my first split board adventure (3 hours uphill - ouch!). Bloody excellent time

  • Anyone interested in a park/jib board?

  • Of course there's a snowboard thread. Was in Norway a few weeks ago, snowstorm most of the week and back thrown out so not much riding happened but got another week in Norway in a bit and then Val d'Isere in march so plenty of time still. I'm thinking of getting the Burton step on system, anyone here tried it? Quite expensive but would be nice not to have the skier friends halfway down the hill before I'm even on my feet.

  • Off to Söll, Austria tomorrow for my first week of the year. Early flight at 7 to try and get an extra bit of boarding in the afternoon/evening. Temperature is looking to be -7 for the first few days so that’ll be a treat I’m sure.

  • You're at Söll
    But you're not a soldier
