I haven't articulated my situation well
I already do a bit of road cycling i.e. amateur events, duathlons of the sort. Nothing major just a bit of fun. I'do more if I had owned the right equipment.
Fortunately I have a couple of mates who already spent £2k on a new bike, subsequently neglecting it after 1500 miles, so I've had access to these (the irony is not lost on me)
I very much appreciate the try-before-you-buy suggestions, but I've already tried and now I want to buy.
Contrary to my initial assumption, it doesn't look like I need to spend £2k to get something decent, which in honesty is a relief. So this thread may have saved me a lot of money already. Thank you..

Agreed, still a bit too much really... you could spend a bit more and get a 2019 version... without that ugly 105 crank!

What brands/models have you tried? Could help people to give those suggestions as I think your initial paragraph has unwittingly confused some of us.

CAAD12 disc would be a good shout if you can stand the BB30. Got a CAAD10 after having fancy aero carbon bikes and I actually prefer it!

Yeah, I meant I am new to the bikes, not the concept, my bad.
I can't recall the models off the top of my head. I have used a 2017 Trek something which was really great, I couldn't fault it, but I didn't love it. I also used a 2016 PlanetX something, which was alright, but it seemed a bit ostentatious and not as user friendly as the Trek.
I also used a rusty 2012ish Boardman something, which was horrible, and never worth much. It was like being the back of a moving caravan

This seems very good ^ I originally discounted Cannondales as all the colour-schemes were gross, but I must have not seen the 2019 range. Perhaps I would have a greater appreciation if my knowledge on components was deeper, rather than basing decisions on paint.

Cannondale product copywriter is a bit hysterical isn't he? (He, for surely it is a man.)

bit pricey for alu and 105

Amey knows nothing. Caad Discs are the one.

Although his canyon is really nice annoyingly.

I'd love one (for no reason) but £1700 seems steep for what it is.
If I visit mountains this year I am going to build up shallow tubular disc wheels for the canyon.

Canyon are crazy good value for money for the sum of their parts.
I didn't buy it as a full bike as I wanted deep section wheels and 50/34 crankset and didnt want to go through the hassle of selling/swapping.The whole argument about they are boring is boring. Its a bike; a tool. If you want interesting collect japanese whiskeys, become a Tate member etc. Why does one need to prove that they are interesting through their bike choice? Is it because their life is extremely dull outside cycling?

I still prefer this over the Caad https://www.evanscycles.com/bmc-teammachine-alr-disc-one-2019-road-bike-EV338293?xid=101164&awc=1302_1540464629_cf2c280f9541865b69d8c14ff3ed893e&utm_source=awin&utm_campaign=101164&utm_medium=Affiliate
And the original Canyon over that. But everyone's convinced me to spend less now

I’m a big BMC fan but that looks incredibly dull. I’m sure it rides great.

Emonda ALR disc 2019 is the most advanced alu disc bike out there atm. Lighter frameset than their own Emonda SL Carbon offering. BB86 (I think).

Yeah but isp.
Okay so not aluminium or in budget. But it’s sick. -

I like Giant and I like ISP too.
Hard to travel with in larger sizes if thats a concern.

its strange as this generally comes from Colnago/Bianchi/Enter small(ish) €urobrand owning yuppies who in fact have dull lives!
At least with Canyon I don't hide my yuppiness. Its a really fucking dull bike that looks semi-interesting because of shallow depth of field. It rides exceptionally well.

I wish it had hidden guard mounts. I’d buy one instantly and sell all my other bikes.

You're the third or fourth person to recommend the Emonda
It's perfect, but I just don't want it, it doesn't speak to me
Here is mine, its quick and comfy
