I started running virtually from scratch at 34 with a decent background in cycling, and got to 1:23 half marathon within 8 months. Probably means I should've started running much younger, but I think anyone with a decent aerobic engine should be able to get to considerably quicker than 2 hr HM given a good few months to condition the legs for the extra pounding.
Hmmm... 4 days to Frankfurt Marathon and right hamstring still feeling slightly niggly after HM 10 days ago. Maybe a touch of taper madness but at least I've got good excuse for resting this week.

Rest is best! My best marathon was after a week of virtually no running at all due to a calf niggle. You will be grand. I'm looking forward to tracking you and the others.
I signed up for a half marathon after being persuaded at training last night. So, this Sunday I'm going along to check how flat the towpaths round Walton-on-Thames are, and exactly what sort of shape I'm in.

I'll keep my eye out next time!

Anyone done Edinburgh marathon? Toying with the idea of using it as an excuse for a weekend away with the family. Any reasons why this is a bad idea?
-

I've done it. It's very flat and it's downhill overall. But the latter half is quite dull as you essentially do an out-and-back route, straight down an incredibly long road on the coast, a U-turn, back along dull road. And the logistics at the start/finish aren't great (both for you and for supporters), you have to get a bus from/to Musselburgh as parking is limited and there are always big queues for bus seats.

probably closer for 1:30 for me, assuming the TT is done on an honest course!

My first and only marathon. "Meh" would be my overall descriptor. Through Edinburgh would be WAY more fun but significantly harder and would probably hammer numbers as a result.

Anyone else fancy Stockholm next year?
-
• #19310
Stockholm is definitely on my list but I'm thinking Rotterdam for spring next year to maintain momentum.

I did it a few years ago and didn't start doing anything approaching proper training until basically four weeks beforehand. That it is the 1st of June and I'm running regularly now is me hoping to do things rather differently this time round.
That said, Rotterdam looks good, but given the date we may not be able to get there from the UK, are you planning on leaving early to mid March?

I’m thinking of doing the Midnight Sun Marathon in Norway next year, need a focus and work are apparently subsidising accommodation and entry fee. Course looks like it doubles back a bit much though.

Ok maybe not Edinburgh then! Any suggestions for good marathon courses, preferably UK based but might be able to swing a shorter trip abroad (will have a new born with us)?

good
Flat & fast or scenic?
F&F try Manchester.
Scenic perhaps the White Peak Marathon (last few miles down railway inclines Middleton Top -> Cromford)

I've heard good things about Barcelona. Cheap to get to, fast course, good logistics.

OK. So i completed the Amsterdam marathon last weekend and i pretty much went out way too fast (half marathon in 1.44) and blew up at 30km. Limped home over 4 hours. I was hoping for 3.30-3.40. I now realize 3.30 was out of reach but i hope with better pacing i can get 3.45 or 3.40.
So i`ve signed up to Rotterdam in April.
I had put together a training plan based on a few things i read for Amsterdam but i would like to get a "proper" one. Anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks

Hansons Marathon method.
even if you ultimately decide on another plan, buy the book and read it. it's a quick read but teaches you some important stuff.

Does the 'covered knees below 15 degrees' rule apply for running too?

What would kl say?

Flat & fast or scenic?
Either really. I've only done one marathon event (London) but been doing plenty of long runs this year so kinda looking to do some long speed work over the winter and aim for a PB but also I like just running in nice/interesting places. For some reason I discounted Manchester when everyone was talking about it a while ago... will reconsider. White Peak looks fun too!
Have to balance racing with growing young family and E24 is the main goal for the summer so not sure how many events I'll get away with... -

I tend to cover knees from about now, before it feels too cold. Kept me injury free over the winter last year.

Being lardy means snow melts as I run past it (slowly).
It might be a different story for those with a BMI < 22 but I've never got cold on a run in shorts and short sleeve top, even in driving snow.
I've worn knee-warmers on a few commutes so far as I don't generate anywhere near as much heat when cycling.

Balance family & racing is hard. There are plenty Mara's around so am sure you'll find a good un if not one of these two. Enjoy!

Full sleeves and legs here from now onwards unless its xc league, where it is vest & shorts and maybe a baselayer if sub zero.
If anyone is going to be bored waiting for clocks to change this weekend, here's a dot watching link: http://racedrone.net/event/dusk-til-dawn
On the taper troubles knife edge so upped the fruit juice and sleep. Saturday's run was a bit daft on reflection tbh but what's done is done.
It's going to be chilly but clear apparently so hopefully a simple nav night. Last time plenty of fog was interesting.
When I did triathlon, I was always pretty consistent in terms of my ranking across each of the three sports (as opposed to many other people who had stronger and weaker disciplines).
At the time my 50mile tt pb was a few seconds over 2hrs, and while I’ve never actually run a half marathon, my marathon pb was around 3:10 which is roughly indicative of a ~1:31 half.
