Just found out they’ve done a limited edition for Air France (possibly not for sale to prols), I like they’ve dropped the sub second divisions but not sure about the colour scheme, think I prefer the original. What’s so good is how thin it is, the proportions are cracking.

The black face is rare - according to Omega they never made them. However, enough exist for there to be no doubt that they did.

Freddo believes that the watch is "numbers matching", i.e. case, bezel, hands, movement and dial are all original, and with the rare face he thinks that this means that the watch (was) undervalued.

The chap who wrote the site that Freddo directed me too earlier (https://www.omegaploprof.com/) believes that the dial and movement are not original to the case, and that the rarity of the dial colour doesn't off-set the lack of originality.

This is the correct dial for the case, but has a service bezel and a movement swap:

(And it's been turned round at some point in the past, but can be put back to the correct orientation).

It's just over a thousand pounds cheaper than the watch I was looking at.

I prefer the Isofrane strap, but the metal bracelet is also quite nice.

Collectors must be extremely cautious when they look for information on the web. Incorrect information could lead them to conclude that their model is in a wrong configuration, and to change some components. This would be catastrophic if an original component stated as wrong / service, would be replaced.

Therefore, the observation & validation cycle is fundamental rule and a necessary step to get the guarantee of reliable information when analyzing and collecting vintage watches.

Can anyone confirm a half-remembered story I thought I’d seen about U.S.-built Rolexes? Built under licence with all legitimate parts to avoid some tax/customs issue? I seem to recall they had an additional logo on the face.. perhaps just after WW2?

Yea, porn is as old as time. Lots of ‘masterpieces’ in the art world were only ever commissioned to hang in bedrooms to help people get off. Now they are ‘hmm’d and ‘ooo’d at in museums.

Interesting last few pages. This watch thing is fascinating. Why buy a watch? It tells the time - Casio £8 on Amazon. Fancier watches can be more expensive but still tell the time.
Buying to wear - buy what you like.
Buying to invest - get advice from an expert and splurge the cash (and cross fingers)

I found the PP discussion most interesting and I still don’t really understand what happened at the end. If I liked the watch, I’d buy it and it seems it may have been a bargain.

I’m still pondering buying a good watch but I’m coming to realise that I should buy what I like and not what a general consensus of opinion thinks. I might ( likely) go and have another look at a Speedmaster on my own and see if my opinion has changed.

I didn’t want to say that specifically. My Apple Watch friend mentions this regularly. He has a vintage Rolex which loses time. I tell him it’s not really the point. He’s practical and I dream.

Would you consider a vintage Speedmaster? I initially tried a new one just out of curiosity as I’d discounted it on size and then slowly discovered as I read more that I like the aged lume on the indices and hands, greying dial, early bracelet etc.
I think @ejay2.0 posted a nice picture of his new and old ones side by side...
