Touch it to your lips when it's been off your wrist for a while/tap it against your teeth? Glass will feel colder and harder than acrylic (though with an issue watch like that it's 99% likely to be acrylic). OTOH if you're going to get it serviced I'd imagine they'll buff up the crystal as part of that; I'd ask them not to polish the case though, as the wear is part of the watch's history.

Nice. Whats the size on this? Guessing 34-36mm but hard to tell from the pic. And what age? 40's?
-
• #30329
Yes spot on is about 34 mm and circa 40s .

Which sinn is this? Looks great.

It looks lovely. A bit small for me but I love the dark face and sub dial.

I'm probably coming to the wrong place for 'subjective advice' but here goes nothing... (also this is a ramble so apologies in advance)
I recently got a promotion at work. Its something I've worked hard for and it's the first promotion I've ever had. As a result, part of me thinks I should mark the occasion and reward myself with something that I can keep long term. As a lot of people do, I'm thinking a watch would be good. However, I recently realised I've got too many watches (7 at present) and said I wouldn't buy/didn't need another.
Has anyone else been through the rational ('don't need') vs emotional ('reward/celebrate') debate? If I don't get something will I regret it?
-
• #30333
Just buy it. Thinking is for losers.
-
• #30334
Seems like you're unlikely to regret buying something to mark the event, so what's holding you back? In real terms you don't need six out of your seven watches.
Do you wear all your current watches? Is there anything you've been lusting after for a while?

@Stonehedge exactly the kind of considered response I was hoping for. hah!
@freddo Out of the 7 I have currently, I mainly wear a SKX009, Christopher Ward C4 (quartz) and my CWC G10. I have a G-Shock that I tend to wear only if i'm worried about damaging another watch and then the other 3 watches get little wear but I'm loathed to part with any of them bar one (a vintage Lancia incabloc auto that is too small).
Since I've ever shown any interest in watches, it's always been a Speedy that has been my grail but as time goes on I'm not sure whether I could justify the spend on one or whether I would wear it as I'd like for fear of damaging it.
The other side of it is that when I look at affordable alternatives that I love the look of (Steinhart Ocean 1 Military/Hamilton Khaki/Squale to name a few) I often wonder whether It's a waste of time when it isn't what I really want.
Plus, as I like tool watches, do I want/need to end up with a bunch of watches that are essentially all the same?

a bunch of watches that are essentially all the same?
This is what is known as a ‘watch collection’. Whether the watches are all the same or not is apparently what distinguishes a ‘collector’ from the rest of us losers.

Many thanks for that I genuinely had no idea.

It's a waste of time when it isn't what I really want.
.
... also
- SKX009 - sell
- Christopher Ward C4 - sell
- CWC G10 - sell
- G-Shock - keep
- 1/3 - keep
- 2/3 - keep
- Lancia - sell
That gives you one practical second watch, two sentimental watches and a Speedy to now wear the majority of the time and enjoy. Actually maybe keep the CWC G10.
- SKX009 - sell

I should have mentioned the other problem in that I'm sentimental. I wouldn't get rid of the Chris Ward as it was my first proper watch, bought for me by my dad. The G10 was a service watch used by my father in law so that would have to stay.
My other worry is that although the speedy is my grail watch and, in some way, the ultimate tool watch, the value of it would really limit my wearing of it as much I'd like. Not sure if the speedy wearers of this parish suffer this problem?

Fair enough. Then keep them. But I don't think that's a valid reason not to get the watch you want. If you don't something will come up and you won't get it.
Originally I was a bit nervous of wearing my nice watch, but then a friend pointed out there was no point in having it if you didn't.
Unfortunately this year I had an issue with my house that put my premium up and cut out lots of insurers. So now it's locked in a safe somewhere until I can afford to add it to my policy.

I think I'm going to buy this, I'd like a vintage one, from the era of when it was the first watch in space, but I haven't been able to find one I like.

Seven watches isn’t too many by any stretch, especially when some are sentimental. If you want a grail watch and it’s not taking food out of your kid’s mouth, go for it.
It took me a long long time to save for my Speedmaster and I do get a bit twitchy about dinging it but that’s also part of the buzz of wearing it. It’ll pass after the first chip and I’m 99% sure it’s with me ‘till I’m pushing daisies so don’t let that put you off.
I’m 40 next year and will mark it with a watch but I can’t for the life of me narrow down what I want. Mega first world problems.

• #30345
I think you're right and I'd like to get to the stage where once I do get one, I get over the fact of its value and enjoy it as it should be enjoyed. Like you, if I get one it will be with me for life.
I just have to get past the mental (and real life) jump of a $400 watch to a $4000 watch. I just looked at the cost of a new one here in Toronto and after taxes they're $7700! -

$7.7k CAD seems a bit steep, if you’re flying through Heathrow you can get a Moonwatch on bracelet for $5.1k CAD, wear it back and post the box later.

So you want to buy a Rolex but want to try some others first. Face it, are you going to buy it now or after your next promotion. If next try not to emmerse yourself in too many omegas or things that look like what you ultimately want.
Edit. As @freddo says some of the seven can be got rid of as not really important to you.
-
• #30348
punt the ones you aren't attached to and buy the speedy. i guarantee you will become attached to it and stop worrying about the $400 watches. i've worn one 99/100 days for the last five years and still love it. it has a couple of minor nicks, but it's all good. i'll let my son deal with that when i am in hell.
