What are we defining as "luxury horology"
One thing I don't hear often is cheap as chips when people talk about Rolex. -
• #30253
Definitely.
Your post reminds me of that Entourage episode where the main dude's secretary is sent out to grab a steel Rolex before meeting a less successful counterparty.

I seem to remember someone on here was looking for a Speedbird GMT. There's one on ebay at the moment for what seems to be a reasonable price

Cheers!
Although Mrs H is now using my eBay ;(
How are you finding it in the flesh after owning it for a bit?
-

I think the comment is more to do with the idea of ranking Rolex models into categories like entry range. Most Rolex are in a roughly similar price range with artificial marketing subdivisions. Really what are the differences between an OP and Explorer 1 or milgauss... or probably even no-date sub?
All are expensive compared to say a Steinhart or a Tissot - so labeling a $6k watch as entry range is silly.
Obvs when you cross reference prices to the no complication big 3, etc. £6k makes them look cheap. For eg how much is the cheapest time only PP?
-
• #30257
Well, a Rolex costing £5k to £50k is cheap as chips compared to a Richard Mille (spits) for £50k to £250k. Or cheap compared to an entry level AP, or PP
Rolex is also cheap compared to any of the genuinely exclusive brands where each item is hand made and the scarcity is real and not a corporate strategy.
I know a guy who hand makes watches to order in the Czech Republic. He has a three year wait for watches right now, because each one takes him a year to make from scratch. Rolex is not in the same bracket as that.

No obviously not, but that is the extreme end of the scale.
Don't get me wrong as we all know I am MR OMEGA through and through but I can appreciate Rolex for what it is not what it is sometimes mistakenly perceived to be.
I think they represent extremely good value in comparison to a lot of other watch brands at the same price point , nothing holds its value like a professional steel Rolex ( for whatever reason) .
Do I want to own one ? No.
Do I want to be without them on the company ? No. -
• #30259
It really does come down to what each individual considers to be the appropriate balance of preferred style and value for money.
I'm not convinced that Rolex offer good value for money compared to other brands at the same price point, but then again I still buy Rolex. I think IWC and Zenith make similarly good quality watches for the same amount or less for example. And Omega for that matter.

I don't disagree with you , its all about personal taste, and as I have said personally for me I think Omega trumps all in this sector, and I don't own a Rolex and never have.
They are all Luxury Watch Brands.
Not " Haute Horology "as some brands claim . -

I've gone back and re-read your post and can't find an answer in there, but whatevs.
If you follow the link there is no answer, however, which makes it somewhat less pithy as a response.
what JB said.
It's an answer, it's not the answer to "what in the Rolex range", which was my question.
Actually that wasn't your original question, made by Rolex was a later clarification.
Datejust has the cyclops, and it's too small.
The AK 5700 is 34mm and has a cyclops, the same as as the DJ I suggested. The DJ is the closest to the AK which is what you asked for.
This is getting silly now. I've offered a reasoned explanation why I don't think the OP is in that list as well as some good alternatives. Just buy what you like and stop asking to have your choices validated.
Why new? Because I have some experience in buying older cars and they cost a fortune to keep correctly
vintage cars ≠ vintage watches. There's no useful analogy here. I've owned both...

I like Omega faces but the bracelets are not so good.
-
• #30263
In what way?
Never had a problem in all my time selling them/owning them. -

Not quite. Lets agree to disagree.

I really really want to buy ejay's Mk2 but I just bought a new car and have some other unexpected expenses so really having trouble justifying it to myself :(

Bro do you even Internet?
Half the Internet is made up of selling you shit and the other half is people validating their purchases. The other half is porn.

That is lovely! You bought it for £750?
Jup.
Brown on Brown
Double-racist. Reported. :)

You're right sorry, the Oriosa is 37mm.
But that Cimer is gorgeous. What is the movement? A quick google suggests that it might be a Lapanouse, in which case you'll have a very hard time getting parts to service it. I guess that's why it's cheap.
Edit: looks like it's a Lapanouse 2370, so some parts might be hard to get. When I was getting my Enicar repaired I had to track down a donor movement which was about £60. I'd take a punt on this at £375

I still like it, I'd buy one again. Quality is very good for the price and the bracelet is decent. I'd say it looks better in the flesh than pictures.
I ended up getting the GMT hand realigned on mine, it seems it's a common issue, but only cost £15 or so.

• #30272
Nothing wrong with them functionally but they're always a bit lack lustre for me.
-
• #30273
Ah good to know! It’s definitely a Lapanouse movement - don’t know exactly which one, or what any differences between them might be... as I’ve only just found it I’m going to hold off until I’m certain I’m into it and not just buying it for the sake of having another watch...

I don't have anything useful to say other than that movement looks like a tricky bitch to work on.

Hmmm....
Just need to see what btc is doing and then persuade someone in my office to let me use their eBay account and then come up with a plausible excuse for where the watch came from.
As I hinted at up thread, but perhaps didn't elaborate on enough...in the world of luxury horology, Rolex is cheap as chips so its silly to label one model as entry level compared to another of similar price and scarcity.
It should be about buying what you like. Not what other people like.
