What camera do I buy? / general gear talk

  • So, I'm thinking about selling my Olympus MFT kit to be replaced by a single camera, something with good manual controls, able to cope with abuse and good zoom range. Ideally to match or exceed the image quality from the OM-D.

    Any ideas?

The olympus kit is as follows:

    1. Olympus OM-D EM-1 with grip, 2 batteries and remote
    2. Pansonic 14mm F2.5
    3. Pansonic Lecia 25mm F1.4
    4. Olympus 45mm F1.8
    5. Olympus 60mm Macro

  • single camera, something with good manual controls, able to cope with abuse and good zoom range. Ideally to match or exceed the image quality from the OM-D.

    Hasselblad H body of your choice + HC 3.5 - 4.5 / 50 - 110mm ?

  • Looks good. My problems are solved.

  • Can anyone tell me how much I should expect to pay for a second-hand Micro Four Thirds prime lens? I've been given a Lumix G1, but it only has a f4+ zoom lens.

  • Don't you already have a Nikon Df ?

  • I do. Thinking maybe a nice stabilised zoom lens would make it into a do it all machine.

  • I know. I don't have any zoom lenses at the moment (I much prefer primes) but I am just finding having so much kit sitting unused a waste.

  • Enough with this nonsense you need to buy more camera equipment now.

  • Hahaha you know I will buy more eventually just now is time to clear out!

  • True, that's why I got a X100f

You have your answer ! Nikon reckon VR lenses are good for four stops, not quite as good as the IBIS in the Oly e-m1 but good enough.

Or just buy a zoom for the Olympus. The Olympus 12-50mm is dirt cheap and weather sealed. Alternatively the 12-40 f2.8 isn't too horrendously expensive for a premium lens.

  • Cross-post from my workshop thread, mkII of an A6000 pouch, still needs a closure but currently trying elastic like used with A&A pouches.

Very lightly padded, camera has a Pixco 25/1.8 so fits with any pancake and half the small lenses available. Might try with the kit zoom later.

    Leather with vintage silk lining.

  • Nice Jiji btw

  • I need to unfollow this thread. You all convinced me that my rx100 was enough for my Nepal trip but I want to buy something flashy and new more than ever

  • What’s wrong with the RX100?

    Buy an A6000...?

  • Nothing at all, and this thread nicely convinced me of that. I came in thinking I could do with a larger sensor and some flexibility with lenses, and left with the knowledge I need to learn some post-processing and shoot in raw.

  • In order of importance;

    Learn to process
    Shoot RAW
    Own fancy shit

  • Say I go on this trip having not learned to process, shooting RAW is gonna give me more scope to fix mistakes in the future, right?

  • The RX100 will shoot RAW and jpg simultaneously. The only issue is storage space.

  • sells camera

  • Depends on the mistake.

Also, as @aggi says, shoot raw+jpg. Take an extra card or three and remember the old reportage photographer trick of putting the rolls of film in your socks - swap cards frequently and hide one in your sock or another difficult-to-lose location. If your card corrupts, is stolen, etc, you won’t have lost all your photos thus far.

  • What's the benefit of shooting both?

  • You have the jpg immediately for viewing/transferring/instagramming... and you have the raw saved for the day you can be bothered to fix the highlights and shadows (or if you ever wanted to print it, and process it properly).
