I know!
It looks like we've narrowed our unsexy choices down to:
- Mazda3
- Hyundi i30
The Mazda3 is preferred as it just feels like a more solid car, although the boot isn't as practical. It is a fucker to find as they weren't that popular, and often not that cheap in good condition... I wonder if people just keep them(?). Other negative is the gear leaver feels like it has a long throw due to the position.
We got in a i30 that had done ~60k and had probably had kids in it and I was pretty impressed by the lack of wear and tear. Although we also saw this one

which had clearly done +100k and been clocked before each MOT. Which I was surprised to learn is now much easier with modern digital dashes than it used to be.Tbh I'm kinda coming back round to the Jazz as at least there are tonnes of cheap ones everywhere.
- Mazda3
This seems the most realistic petrol option. They often have FSH and were popular with older folk. Iirc Honda have records of service history that you can check with them.
Unfortunately, Mr H has vitoed the Civic based on size and being too rude. I've found the biggest pain of for cars in that price bracket is location.
Spending £8k seems to open up all sort of good choices within easy reach. When you half that it's a mission. Especially in manual petrol.
