think Astor Spirits was on my list of places to buy whiskey from last time I was in New York and never got to make the trip to it..

King's County is very expensive, I would go for Widow Jane (made in Red Hook) over that if you were going to buy a NY "bourbon". But any time you buy a whiskey from the city you have to be cognizant you're paying a hefty mark-up because of how expensive rent is.
Hillrock and Hudson are better bets. Whistlepig is very good, too (Vermont). Farther a field a lot of people swear by Stranahan's (Colorado) and Virginia Highlands is a surprisingly good single malt, a bit of a curiosity; Sonoma County West of Kentucky is solid.
Astor Wine and Spirits (in NoHo) has an incredible selection and good prices.
