So, our '07 Polo was hit whilst parked on Friday, no details left and the garage seems pretty sure that insurance will write it off.
We were pondering getting something bigger anyway so this would appear to be an opportune moment. What should we be looking at for around £2-4k? Moon on a stick desires are reliability, efficiency, internal space, 'ruggedness' (needs to be used for vet work), torque, fun. The Polo met my expectations for reliability, efficiency, torque and fun so I'm easily pleased.

Have you considered an 80s G-wagon?

I'd prefer something a little more premium.
I think I'd like the Pinnacle Arkose of cars, whatever that is.

In all seriousness, for that kind of budget, i'd look at something like a diesel (if you're happy with diesel obvs...) Focus will be reliable, cheap to maintain and efficient.
They're one of the better handling cheap cars so fun enough to throw around (if you're talking Polo as a benchmark.

diesel
What's the consensus on this? Polo was diesel, I liked it, but am I going to be responsible for climate change and acid rain whilst being taxed to within an inch of my life if I get another?

Not sure then, friends had to source parts from scandawgia. Could not source parts here new or second hand.

Will you be getting money back as part of diesel gate?
Do you like the car? Would it be cheaper not fixed via the insurance?
-
• #44535
Depends where you live and how you use the car but things like an increased tax on fuel and ULEZ restrictions could be something to consider for the future.
Petrol is definitely (slightly) kinder to the environment but, especially in the bracket you're looking at, you'll immediately notice the difference in torque between a diesel and a petrol car.

Fuck diesel.

=Get a minimum of 5.4 litres of petrol engine.

I knew you'd pop up hence the bracket qualifier.
If you can find a 5.4l petrol between £2-4k then even i might consider it...

Get a golf estate.
Pick the engine that best suits you're needs and costs and you're set.
(I happen to also own an arkose, and if your analogy is a no frills, reliable workhorse, which does most things well enough that is my experience of a Golf Estate, and Arkose)

Manages a whopping 318 horsepower from 6.0 litres worth of v12

Given how much that weighs, I expect performance to be in the QE2 range then...

Probably best viewed on your own, late at night, with the list price in cash on your person.

It'll be the opposite, some old guy who has run it into the ground with mediocre maintenance, gives no shits about cars, more likely to be mugged by potential buyers

Premium Arkose is probably a 1 series
nope, not difficult that i know of? quite readily available used too as they crossover from so many of the saloon cars
