  • Does anyone know if the wahoo core can take a bike with an long rear mech?

  • I don't see why not, as long as you have the right cassette installed

  • I just reading that the new Tax Flux says now takes long cage mechs so worth checking.

  • Does anyone use their own workouts to control the resistance on the smart trainers?

    #TooLazyToChangeGear

  • Isn't that the whole point of a smart trainer?

  • And a zillion other features I thought

  • So I have a wahoo bolt with set programmes, which I guess you can modify

Or just use the Sufferfest App and stump up the cash

  • Dumb trainer, powermeter & speed sensor

No longer subscribed to TrainerRoad - What app can record a static ride along with power metrics?

Have just tried with Strava, but doesn’t seem to work without a gps signal...

  • You can’t modify the Wahoo built in workouts. You can add more with a Training Peaks or Today’s Plan subscription.

  • There's probably some weird thing out there. But what I'd do, is get a plan (British cyclig, something?) And just ride to levels on the power meter you have. Log in training peaks.

  • Thank you, just realising that I may be better off getting a direct drive turbo for cheaper - but then no power......

  • Having gone smart, I wouldn’t go back. I reckon the quality of the workout is better as you can’t fail to hit the power targets. It also removes the mental strain of concentrating on hitting the targets all the time. Just the luxury of an hour or three every week when you can listen to a podcast or just think about stuff if worth it to me. I tried my dumb trainer again with my brother’s power tap wheel a while ago and it was just awful - mentally draining and not helpful training wise at all.

You could argue that the mental aspect of holding a certain target is helpful for training, but having raced HCs (basically exactly that for similar-to-turbo-trainer durations) I’ve not found it to be the case.

  • 100% this. I'm really bad at managing my own efforts is either attack or let myself go most times. With the wahoo the thing knows my power so it's just choosing a workout and stick to it.
Takes a lot of willpower to dig deep in a dumb turbo, with the smart there's no way out but to push whatever watts you have to

  • Agree it has to be no hassle, so you can just concentrate on the intervals without interruptions.
So what I could do with is a direct drive with accurate power

  • The Powertap software? Golden Cheetah? Does your phone have ANT+? Does it need to be live - can you just use a Garmin and dump it afterwards?

  • you can’t fail to hit the power targets

    Wanna bet?

  • mentally draining and not helpful training wise

Mentally draining IS helpful training. So is pacing an effort without something doing it for you.
I still use both my Computrainer and my fluid trainer when I can.

  • You can also do 'breakthrough' workouts on a dumb trainer. When you're riding to RPE and make more power because you're feeling good. You're not riding to a limit you may have fixed too low.

ie. we're all doing regular FTP testing aren't we... are you setting arbitrary load values for those tests?

  • I just use the ramp test in trainerroad, it does a good work on setting FTP for further workouts, can't say if it's any close to real world numbers. If for any reason it feels too easy just toggle the intensity a small % up (or down if my legs are cooked)

  • Yep, regular testing. You’re right, one can fail to hit power.

Mentally draining is helpful but I’m fairly experienced at pacing my race efforts so I don’t feel like missing out. I’m sure it would be very helpful to lots of people though.

Having said that, hanging on until the end of an interval is not the same ruining yourself in a race.

Don't know if youre still looking, but I use one of these (different brand, can't remember the name but is the exact same except it was more expensive) when I need directions to somewhere and it's very good for the price. Can kind of make using the screen when it's on a bit awkward and my knee hits it when I'm out of the saddle then but I like it.

  • Has anyone here tried road grand tours or virtugo?

  • ie. we're all doing regular FTP testing aren't we... are you setting arbitrary load values for those tests?

    coughs

  • Is it dumb training to be trying to sing along when "bring the noise" pops up on the playlist?
