@ hippy maybe we could change the title to sleeping systems - bags, mats etc.
Anyway, is this the best 2 person mat? It's kind heavy!

Klymit double V is also pretty good I've heard
-
• #529
I had v before and wasn't so keen on it. Much prefer a flatter profile than ribbed.

Are these decent? If so, does anyone want to go in with me?

just ordered a warbonnet wookie underquilt and matching mamba top-quilt for my hammock. should see me well into the depths of winter. hopefully with me in next 2-3 weeks tops so i can give it a try before end of sept and autumn kicks up.

Hmm, I might be up for that

Katabatic palisade is better for the cash imo. Incredibly comfy
-

Does anyone have any opinion on the Mountain Equipment Helium Solo?
I picked one up cheap with a damaged zip. V light but doesn't seem like it will be very useful for UK conditions. Anyone got one? -
• #535
Georgel, Could you post a link to the one you ordered please as I´m considering the Aegismax route as well but there´s so much out there.

Also, does anybody on here own a Cumulus Quilt 450?
-
• #537
no, but, looking at it:
- open footbox - imo closed footbox is always better
- 10 year warranty - great!
- where do they source their down from? hope it's not live plucked
- open footbox - imo closed footbox is always better

• #538
I thought it was you who recommended Cumulus here in the first place?
-
• #539
they're a decent option if you're on a tight budget
if you use it regularly, worth investing - katabatic palisade or a PHD model for example -
• #540
- They do do open ones as well. They call them comforters.
- -
- They say the down is from Poland.
Don´t see myself dropping Katabatic/PHD amounts of cash.

just saw this on ebay
would recommend it over the cumulus, or for anyone looking for a nice quilt.
nunatak gear is phenomenally well made. -

Is there a super compact down alternative? A synth bag of some sort that packs super small?
-
• #543
I have the Helium 400. I think the Mountain Equipment rating for a 'good night's sleep' is pretty accurate from my experience.
Solo = 7C
Helium 400 = -5C
I'd say its not warm enough for a lot of UK stuff but hold on to it for when you are sure it will be warm. -
• #544
no.
synthetic bags will always be noticeable more bulky when packed, compared to a high fill power (800+) down bag of the same temperature rating. -
• #545
if it's only for summer you could try something like this https://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/equipment-c3/sleeping-bags-c21/sleeping-bags-c88/oscar-10-synthetic-sleeping-bag-p9359
I've failed to get my down sleeping bag so wet that it can't dry out or has become a problem so I'd still stick to that unless you plan to tour somewhere unimaginably wet.

So, what I'm now going to work on is designing a synth bag that's better than down. Someone must already be working on this so why isn't there a solution yet? Fucking material scientists, lazy bastards...
-
• #547
£184 is more than the PHD bag I got rid of.
I want something light, small, warm, cheap to go in my bivvy for more comfortable (read: any) sleep.
Fuck it, I'm staying in hotels.

"100% recycled synthetic filling made from post consumer PET bottles"
If it's made from coke bottles it should not cost £180+
starts using vegetable peeler on empty drink bottles
"Packed size compressed 13x15cm" not bad...
