We all get used to the sound of our systems. If you have 2 and one of them provides a reference it's easier to keep track of changes in the other one. Where I think it gets interesting is how your system can affect what you choose to listen to. I've had setups where I'd started to listen mostly to rock because the system suited that kind of music. The same way that certain monitors are really popular with DJ's but they sound terrible with guitar based music.

I can't imagine a system that would lead me into the quagmire that is EDM.

Is EDM a specific thing or is it just American for all dance music?
Would house or d'n b = EDM?

EDM used to be a respectable sub-genre label but it got turned into a circus of pricks in the US. I'd don't even use it as a label now and would avoid anything that advertised itself as EDM but what people choose to do in their own time is their choice etc.
My point is some music sounds shit on systems that are tuned a particular way through desire or accident even though there could be types that still sound great. Radio hits are often shit on a decent system but sound great on a building site radio.

I have no idea what you are on about.

Go to bed for a few hours and the place blows up.
When I say EDM it encompasses a fairly wide range of stuff, but for me it's anything that is overly sampled and manufactured and lacking in "soul" for want of a better word. I like guitars. I like singing. I like melody.
I think I get what you're saying @Airhead, I think though that certain colouring or style of a system could never drive me to a form of music, just away from that system if it makes music I love sound like shit. -

EDM is American for Dance music as a whole but also typically refers to cheesy house music with words (played by ‘superstars’ with pre-recorded sets) and whatever the fuck dubstep is called in its latest evolution (ie skirillex).
I’ve heard a fair number of speakers that have a scoop in low mids (and slight boost either side) that destroys bass guitars but makes synth basses and sampled kicks sound very clean and punchy. A bit chicken and egg probably but I like my monitors flat. -

I'm just saying a system tends to bias you toward a certain type of music unless it's close to neutral and full range but it's probably one of a type you already appreciate.

I have a pair of Mission Audio's that the black veneer is fading, any idea how to bring it back to black again?

Fuck, those JBL monitors looked amazing.
Been rocking John Lee Hooker on the “big” speakers this morning. Made ironing a shirt for a job interview a joy.
Not bad. My Celestions are on shelves. Solid wood jobs with chunky steel brackets. Foam tape between the brackets and the brick wall and little adhesive rubber pads between the speakers and surface of the shelf. Sounds great to me. To be honest the reverberations from the half down guitars in the vicinity are more likely to cause aural coloration than anything to do with the shelf or walls vibrating.
Having said that, the best I've ever heard them was when they were sat on a thick marble mantelpiece firing across the room rather than down it. Not sure how much of that was mounting, positioning or the fact that they were new (to me) at that point. I have very clear aural memories of hearing them there and being blown away. Perhaps i've just got used to them now?
