  • Hoping the hive mind can spare my some grief tonight. Fitting newer, wider guards this evening.
Best process for fitting new guards?
Currently has been something like this - looking to see if I'm doing anything deeply stupid (other than not paying someone to do it for me)

    1. Remove wheel
    2. Loose fit new guards
    3. Wheels back in
    4. Offer up stays to gauge length - mark for cutting
    5. Back on with end caps tighten everything with wheels in place
    6. Profit?
  • There's normally a couple of intermediate steps mainly involving swearing. And some bleeding. You can fit these in around any of the 6 steps above, repeating as necessary.

  • It seems so simple when I put it like this, but I started on the front Sunday evening, checked the forecast and realized I could put it off until tonight. Also wishing I had something other than a junior hacksaw for the stays

  • As someone who's tried a few times with SKS and GB's, a junior hacksaw is not the tool for the job, IMO. I'd be more tempted to pay for someone to do it for me, or just nip down to Wickes and grab a dremel.

I concur. A dremel and/or a set of bolt cutters can be good. I generally recommend a dremel as you can smooth off any sharp burrs.

  • I knew I should have just bought a bolt cutter the last time - I assume other than additional panting/swearing - functionally same outcome w/ junior hacksaw? Could wait until this weekend but rather just get them on really. Weather looks like I could chance it tomorrow...

  • Bluntish junior hacksaw fine for me. Just pop rubber end caps on.

  • I need some mudguard flaps. I’ve thought about this a lot and I’m going for plastic ones. They’re going on 50mm GBs.

I found some that are mainly black and much like the Raw ones. They are £9 but now lost the link (doh).

    The other option is topflaps.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m happy to drill the guards to fit them and I’d like them on the inside to look neat.

  • I need some mudguard flaps

    yes you do

  • Yep bolt cutters or dremel much easier. You can also forgo the end caps if you cut the stays to the proper length.

  • Those sks bluemel stingrays look nice but they look like they are not available in a 35 mm in the uk.

I see that portland are bringing out a 37 mm width that will cover a gravel king or g one 30 , the go to tyre of choice by some here.

  • Is there a version of axiom axle runners that works nicely with track nuts? And is there a cheaper version? They're expensive

  • So I had to get back in touch with Velo Orange about my cracked guard today as I'd heard nothing from Practical Cycles Psychos, seems like they'd told VO that they'd tried to contact me a few days ago but had no reply.

I checked my email including junk and trash folders incase I'd missed something and there was nothing.

VO offered to pass on my contact details to PC so I agreed and I got an email from PC saying that they'd tried to contact me but I hadn't replied so I had one last chance to reply to them but that VO wouldn't do anything under warranty because of the issue with the damage when they were delivered. I'd already told VO about the damage and how it was in a totally different area and they hadn't said anything about that voiding the warranty so I copied VO in on my reply and what do you know, PC suddenly became a lot more helpful!

  • Anyone tried Pelago jobbies?

  • how tukt(?) should the guard be to the tyre? I assume as close as possible + a few mm to allow for detritus? I ordered some bolt cutters - Sunday is the day

  • Put them on my OH's bike. They're nice. Rattle a bit but I think that's just my poor installation.

  • As large a gap as you can stylistically justify, especially at the egress end: stuff going in needs to get out so evenly spaced is okay, but a little closer in at the ingress is better

  • How many do you need? I may have a spare pair.

  • I just got some Bibia flaps for my 26" MTB, work a treat.

  • Cheers looks very clean that

  • A pair would be awesome! Will pm

  • brake cable cutters worked pretty well too.
GB stays are aluminium so much much easier to cut.

  • Probably been asked before, but cutting sks stays. No hacksaw or Dremel, but do have a parktool cable cutters, possible? Or go buy a hacksaw?

Edit: just scrolled back a page or two, I'm an idiot.....sigh.

  • Park Tool cutters are what I used on SKS stays. Used a Dremel on GB stays, but only because I had it out already.
