• So to be clear this is what I'm after:

    • something that won't explode going down a mountain
    • something that won't explode through normal riding (I'm 80 kg, bike will be somewhere between 5-10 kg - no idea)
    • rim brake
    • £150 or less
    • don't weigh a ton
    • testicle impalation/knee-ectomy a bonus

    options I've got:

    • I spoke to a guy offering some Cole Rollen Lite for £70 with a set of Clement tyres (I need tyres)
    • I also spoke to a guy offering those Spiney RG (pictured ^ above), not much wear, for £150
    • I have a crap old aluminium Ksyrium front wheel (pictured on this horrid bike) which I can use if necessary but nothing appropes for the rear
    • doesn't seem to be many great options on the forum at the moment

    What do I do?

I have £0 income - I'm paying for this through the sale of another bike - don't tell me to buy Hunt wheels unless you want to sell me yours for £150.

Someone help or I'm going to end up committing a great crime: aero frame and cheap shallow rims

  • What do I do?

Compare anything you're offered with shiny new Aksiums. If whatever you're looking at isn't better than that, it needs to be cheaper. I'm happy to entertain arguments (cup & cone, J-bend) for Shimano RS010, which is under £100 at any competitive retailer, but on balance I marginally prefer the Aksium.

  • My problem with those (and the Coles) is they're nearly 1900g. The whole point of this bike is to ride up some mountains (in violation of my own principles, on normal road gearing, not 20 GI). Feel like there must be something better out there second hand for £150. Feel like I could build something better myself for £150 in fact but don't have time.

But you're right, both of those options I suggested aren't great in comparison to the Aksiums. Urgh.

Annoyingly I sold some hardly-used Fulcrum Racing 5 for £50 a few months ago, they would have done the job
