We once went to a dinner party that we thought was for our friend's birthday, but actually turned out to be more of a big ol' vegan bring-a-dish with her housemate's friends, who seemed somewhat surprised that we brought a birthday cake. After a couple of hours of the worst sort of vegan (and "wellness") gossip and bitching, some wine was produced that the host had thought was vegan, but was actually vegetarian. Cue it being handled like a live bomb and confined to the furthest corner of the lounge away from the party in the dining room, to be thrown out.

Needless to say we were quite amused and kindly took care of it for them. Can't abide waste...

  • Yeah, I froze loads in little dollops.

  • The wine wasn’t drunk because it wasn’t vegan. End of. I find it weird to say that you were amused though.

Had it been a dinner party for coeliac sufferers and a wheat item was discovered, that too would have been treated like a live bomb, but I’m guessing that wouldn’t be as funny due it being a medical rather than ethical issue?

The most important thing, I think, is to respect other people’s life choices without assimilating or mocking them. I know you guys eat eggs from your own chooks and consider that to be part of your definition of veganism, but I’m sorry to say that a vegan lifestyle is black and white: no animal products at all. Plant based is another matter and might not tickle you so much.

Not being deliberately obtuse here or asking for a “#cba” response, just suggesting that a more empathic approach might be better.

  • I’m sorry to say that a vegan lifestyle is black and white

This is interesting to me as a non vegan, because if I were to become vegan I wouldn't, for example, just throw away my leather belt which has many years of service left as that is a waste. But I would still be a vegan, at least in my mind I would be, and I think a lot of others would accept that I was vegan despite my continued use of an animal product I had for years before becoming vegan.

Not trying to be argumentative, but I think how people define the term and themselves can be more complex.

  • I totally understand that viewpoint!

When we moved to being vegan, it started with just food and quickly evolved to incorporate toiletries, cleaning products and clothes. I ended up donating all my non-vegan but good condition clothes to charity shops and friends, so they at least weren’t wasted.

I think that’s the difference between vegan and plant based really. One is a consuming lifestyle choice and the other is a considered way of eating. Neither is wrong or better, it’s up to the people involved. You weren’t argumentative at all, fyi!

  • Yes, I suppose that came across a bit sneery, and no, I wouldn't have expected them to drink it of course. However, having been subjected to some of the most bizarre holier-than-thou dietary and lifestyle one-upmanship I've ever encountered (including some awful anti-vaxer bollocks), the glaring error in reading comprehension and subsequent literal arms-length handling of the bottle couldn't help but be a bit absurd.

Shitty attitudes and schadenfreude I guess.

  • That eggscalated quickly.

  • Fuck me that looks good..

  • I think that’s the difference between vegan and plant based really.

That's an interesting point, I've never really thought of the subtle distinction between the two. I guess a lot of people use the terms to mean the same thing but for "full"* vegans it's an important distinction.

*not the best way of describing it but hopefully you know what I mean.

  • I totally get it. I'm not someone who thinks elitism belongs in the world and I have lots of purely dietary vegan chums and I think nothing less of their choices at all. If anything, I think it's really sustainable that they want to use things up and wear them out, instead of simply rejecting them!

There's plenty of room for us all, as long as empathy and consideration is extended to all, as appose to mockery or belittling, which was why I initially commented on this thread. Some vegans might be preachy etc, but that's their choice and I don't think it should naturally invite derision, as that says far more about the person sneering than the people being mocked.

  • Christ on a bike. That REALLY looks good. never been but I really want to now! Let me know how it is?

  • My Dad took his parents for afternoon tea at the Ritz after he finished his professional qualifications and I'd like to carry on the tradition. Neither of my parents are vegan so going somewhere which has vegan options rather than being solely vegan would be ideal.

Has anyone had any experience of the Vegan afternoon tea at the Ritz? It would be a surreal experience for a country bumpkin like me but one I'd like to undertake all the same.

  • Do you know the name? We have friends down there and want to impress them with my local knowledge.

  • Palacio Lounge, right in the town centre :)
Also amazing vegan pasties at that tiny pie shop (which is now painted red, for extra local knowledge points) next to the Kings Pipe

  • Cheers dude

  • I went to The Ritz, although I'm not vegan (I'm allergic to dairy) the non-dairy options were great. They had substitutes for everything. Just had to give them notice when you book.

  • Amazing! Thanks for the info!

  • isn't the lead time for tea at the ritz like 6 months?

  • Had a lovely meal at The Bean Inn in Carbis Bay near St Ives the other day. Very tasty with all vegan options for their dishes. Well worth a look for Cornwall trips.
