I really really want a Squid Fuck You Johnny... The question is do I want a Squid Fuck You Johnny more than I want a Chromag/ some other hardtail 29er?

I always liked the look of these (designed by the Black Mountain Cycles chap), but @mmccarthy had one and said it was shit.

Most of my issues were with the stock fork being terrible (swapped it for a nice Salsa one which was a huge improvement) and the EBB being a royal pain in the arse to keep clean to prevent it from seizing.
Aside from that, pretty solid bike. Bought mine new in 2009 for under £400 as far as I recall.
Also came with Avid BB5s which were not great, soon changed those for some BB7s.

On-one groove armada

I've never fancied the BTR purely for the look of the thing :(
I would give some serious consideration to one of these though, would have to be fun with a dropper! Allegedly an XC frame but super slack as is Nicolai's want.

What’s up with the dropouts?

Adjustable geometry innit.

Took my 1x1 for a good thrashing around the local woods and continually amazed by how hard you can push it on the trails. Such a rowdy bike!

The perfect antidote to mid season blues. Hard not to smile as I turn the first pedal strokes. Hard not to throw up after the first max effort ascent.

What is that (apart from a Trek)? Looks great.

Superfly SS. Sadly discontinued. Features some semi WW bits and pretty light.

Those things were really cool. Every once and again someone at Trek manages to push through something really weird and rad to production, and that bike was one of those projects imho.

This one's ok, I guess.
i bought a halo fat foot cog yesterday it has a pretty big footprint, 2x - 3x the width of the old cog it replaced
i think the surly single speed cogs are also pretty wide where they meet the freehub body
