Mudguards

  • I wasn't very lucky with my front Longboard. It picks up a lot of surface water and accelerates it
up the mudguard where it comes out the sides just at the right height to deposit it on your feet.
Keeps the underside of the frame clean though.
It's also pretty wobbly at the bottom and mine eventually snapped off. I attached a large
mudflap and it deflects the water much closer to the ground so it never reaches my feet.

  • Hard to tell from the website though they all seem to have the same 5 year guarantee. I'd go for the ones with the most coverage at the best price.

  • They do, I ordered both and compared. The difference is mostly on the front one. In terms of coverage it goes something like:

    Chromoplastics: useless
    Bluemels: good
    Longboards: best

But Bluemels have that fancy matte finish which does look nice.

  • Not the leathers washers, I think he's speaking of the big alu one. Maybe are they included in more recent packages. I had them when I bought mine six months ago.

Yeah thats the ones. They include them now and they have a sticky side and a hole. When you've drilled the hole for the bridge mount, you pop them on the inside and they 'reinforce' around the hole so they don't split.

When they sent my replacement, it had one, and so far (touch wood) now issues at all.

Because you don’t get anything more for your money (unlike good saddles, or good tyres)?

You do, you get dry feet and a worry free ride. I know I'm probably in the minority, but to me a decent set of mudguards is well worth the money. Not just for rain where they make you more comfortable, but in summer keeps a lot of dust and dirt out of the drivetrain etc. They also look a lot better than plastic one.

And lastly, if you still need convincing, you're not buying plastic (save the planet etc).

If you don't want to get VO, treat yourself to a set of Honjo's from SimWorks (or UK if anywhere sells them) and you're getting a product for life.

  • My fucking VOs, GAH!

Silent when I rode by myself on Monday, rattling like all fuck when out with a mate yesterday and then silent again today when I rode the bike to work, in the pissing rain, instead of driving, in order to fix the rattle.

Have put a half link in my chain to make a bit more room at the front and hopefully that’ll banish the rattle.

  • Whats the accepted mudguard width vs tyre width? The Arkose I acquired has SKS longboards and 35mm Marathon Supremes. I can almost see the tyre looking down on top so I'm sure these guards are too narrow. I guess my question is better put as: will I get a significant benefit from the correct guard width in terms of coverage/less horribly wet feet?

  • Whats the accepted mudguard width vs tyre width?

Guard width = tyre width + 10 mm (minimal). Jan Heine even recommends 40% wider than your tires.

Too narrow guards will cause side spray, and to keep your feet dry you need enough coverage (especially at the front of course) and a PROPER mudflap.

  • 10mm +-3mm. I have 37mm tyres under 45mm guards atm and wouldn't want to go wider. And yeah, side coverage is pretty important, otherwise the water just escapes from the sides and blows back onto your feet/legs.

  • Awesome, thanks both. Will get myself some 45mm longboards - can't see me going wider than 35mm for the foreseeable future - hopefully drier feet form here on in!

  • ^^^^^

Well that’ll be what the horrendous rattle was then...

Presumably they’ve cracked as I had drilled too many holes in them (I’ve had them on 2 bikes, maybe 3) so doubtful for any warranty cover, should I just get more of the same or...gb? Don’t have budget for Honjo.

  • Anyone had a rear SKS break, snapped clean acroos, right above the brake bridge?
    Wondered what the rattlin' was.
Have mailed SKS (well, you never know), bought new less that 11 months ago and they have done at least 8k miles...
    edit. Can't load a pic.

  • What's the best thing to do with a bike with mudguard eyelets but not very much fork clearance? At least it seems like there isn't much to me - I'm not experienced in mudguard fitting. Ideally I'd like bigger than these (25mm) tyres and mudguards, and it seems a shame to get SKS Raceblade Long because they don't use the eyelets.

  • Nothing preventing you from using your fork eyelets with Raceblade longs. You clearance is too tight even for PDWs.

  • Isn't there some full type guards that are split so there's almost no guard under the fork, just a strip of metal but guard out front and behind.

  • I guess I'll go with the raceblades then, and probably have to stick to 25mm, thanks

@M_V Raceblade Long II are like that:

  • Any recommendations for mudguards with 42mm tyres? got some longboards i think that cracked ion half where the bridge was a couple of days ago. want something sturdier and maybe one that looks good. I reckon maybe putting some sort of rubber in between might haelp with the vibrations

  • I used to have pelago in 45mm flavour but that may be too close with 42mm tires?

  • Welcome to the club.

    Alu guards >>>>>>

  • I wish they made these 'Long' raceblades in XL width.

I have just fitted some 'Raceblade XL Stealth' ... which was super easy and they stay put (even off-road riding doesn't induce rattling) but they're way too short. There's zero coverage in front of the rear seatstay-bridge or the fork-crown. The crown mounted front light is going to get blasted.

  • Hmmm yeah but VO have said they’re gonna sort me out so,

    <<<<<<<

It’s gonna be funny, I bought the guards off Practical Cycles via eBay and they arrived squashed at one end. I contacted PC to say the packaging was a but rubbish and tell them about the problem but that I reckoned I could just bend it back but wanted to inform them 1st as if they didn’t bend back I’d want replacements. They gave a snarky reply saying their packaging was fine (it wasn’t) and that if I damaged them it’d be on me or something.

In the end I did manage to fix them but I left neutral feedback for the sale and then got a few really snarky messages from PC and subsequently found I was blocked from buying from them.

Bet they’ll be gutted when VO tell them to send me a new set of guards for free!

  • Ha!

Freshtripe sell them also (I think) if PC refuse to acknowledge your existence.

  • First time poster. I've had bluemels, crud roadracer 2 and race blade pro xl before. Looking for some guards for my latest commuter project which is a 2017 caadx apex1 with 32mm conti 4 seasons on it. I have some crud roadracer3 boxed on the shelf from back when halfords did them for a tenner.

I'm looking for something permanent with good coverage but a stealthy look.

Does anyone do guards with black stays these days?

  • VO mounting hardware is all black, I think. Can use that with a variety of guards.

  • My frame does not have any eyelets, and in a more or less (maybe more more than less) close future, if I would be inclined to have eyelets added by a framebuilder, my fork is still quite narrow.
I was wondering: is it a completely dumb idea to file the sides of full metal mudguards such as Berthoud or Velo Orange just to fit a narrow fork? (I guess it is but since I have seen quite some hacks/bodges on here I reckoned it could be worth asking)
