Wonderful find, and I like how painstaking you are with this.
I'd recommend adding some lemon juice to accelerate the wire wool method - it served me pretty well for a year of restoring old racers. The smell of lemon juice and rust brings back great memories. But you may find you still prefer dry wire wool, each to his own.
