That would slow me down too much. And smaller roads have crazy drivers too.

That's your call. I routed on slower roads to avoid busier ones. I also used some busier ones.

It's still a rider's choice 'on the ground' though and if they're not comfortable with a road they can't blame the orgs for their arrival on it or continued use of it.
