  • Al-Deli represent!

  • The Centrist Dad meme, or more specifically the way it has now widened to include anyone with political views to the right of Lennin.
Actually all political tribalism like this is pretty lame, but let's start with this one*.

*May be linked to the fact that I'm a dad with broadly centre-left political views.

  • Yeah, pretty much exactly that sort of stuff.

  • you hitch your cart to a wagon, you're gonna cop shade from someone. like suggesting anyone with leftist views is a card carrying leninist i spose. i can't think of a time when things were never thus.

  • It's not the throwing of shade that bothers me, it's the weird backward logic that moderates willing to accept pragmatic compromise for the sake of making progress are somehow fratonising with the enemy. Moderates being anyone who doesn't immediately shout "Gammon" when a centre-right argument is given. It drowns out all sensible debate on a subject.

  • Gammon!

  • usually the pragmatic compromise is related to maintaining the status quo regarding economics ie house prices

  • It drowns out all sensible debate on a subject.

where the only acceptable interpretation of the word 'sensible' is one that is agreeable to moderates?

    and so it goes.

  • Massively oversimplified but is this linked with the idea of right-creep in politics over the past decades? In so much as it could be argued, that centre and centre-left moderates have given more ground in political discourse and policy making. If one ties this in with the millennial general feeling of disenfranchisement (figuratively speaking) then feeling that anyone willing to discuss a compromise with the right is a scab/neo-lib etc becomes the knee jerk reaction?

  • Quite possibly. The use of "nudging" to edge the centre ground to the right is a worrying tactic. I'm not sure shit memes are the answer though ;)

  • I meant sensible behaviour, not sensible ideas. Coming to a conclusion about whether the idea is a good one is the whole point of having a debate. And of course everyone gets to come to their own conclusion.

  • we seem to be talking in abstracts here - can you think of an example of a sensible idea that is worthy of debate, preferably one that has been soundly poo poo'ed by 'the left'?

not spoiling for an internet punch up.

  • Brexit.

  • oh christ, i walked face first into that one.

  • Haha!

I hate the whole seam of shitty American tv that my missus is such a sucker for. I'm talking about the the kind of comedy-drama series that pitches itself as a peer of The West Wing but is in fact just a thinly disguised soap with a flimsy medical or political angle. Tropes are washed-out muted colour palette, absurdly hollywoody looking protagonists peppered with several tired looking ex West Wing, Gray's Anatomy or Ally McBeal cast members.

Scripts veer from overwrought emotional nonsense to quirkily humanising comedy awkwardness signified by plinky-plonky comedy music. Speaking of the music every episode ends with a montage in which the main character learns a profound universal truth in voiceover over a fucking Ski Patrol song. ER, Suits, Scandal, Madame Secretary, Gray's Anatomy and my latest irritation, Brothers and Sisters... Beneath the surface they're all identical and they're ENDLESS.

  • they're all shit

    Ftfy

  • I always read ‘Grays Anatomy’ as ‘Gary’s Anatomy’. Neither is a show I particularly want to watch.

  • Those brown trainers that schlubby dads in supermarket denim hope will pass as shoes

  • Massive Godwin in the first panel of that cartoon.

  • Milquetoast kids beatboxing at 90mph into shitty Maplin guitar amps on street corners. Truly the lowest of the human arts.

  • well i think the operative word is 'cartoon', but fairynuff.

fash-chops aside, 'defending' the right for hate speech to be uttered in public is a firm favourite of centrists. mostly i suspect because what's being said doesn't affect them in any meaningful way.

  • oh christ yes. even worse than living statues. or the soppy twat that plays coldplay covers to asian tourists outside the tate most days.

  • Meh. Can’t even.
