• I built this bike up a few years back, but it's never been used so I'm looking to sell it... for my next bike / project. What do you think is a fair value for it?

When I built it I was fairly selective about the parts I used so most things are in mint - t0 - good condition, apart from the odd rust sport.

Frame - 1988 Raleigh Castorama, Size 54cm, Reynolds 653, Powder coated matte black

    Handlebar - Cinelli Giro D'italia, 64 - 44

Stem - Cinelli something... hand polished!

Headset - Campagnolo Super Record Alloy

Bar Ends - Hope Grip Doctor

Seatpost - Ritchey Classic Polished (2-Bolt)

    Saddle - Selle Italia Turbo

Pedals - Campagnolo Chorus Pedals, Topclips (medium) & Straps

    Brakes - Campagnolo Chorus Monoplaner

Brake Levers - Silver Acor Levers

    Pads - Campagnolo Veloce

    Crankset - Campagnolo Record

Crank Bolts - NOS Campagnolo Record 8mm

    Chain - KMC (Wide)

    Front Ring - Dura-Ace 144BCD 46T

    Rear Ring - 17 T

Bottom Bracket - Campagnolo Chorus 102mm English

    Rims - Mavic CXP 10

    Hubs - Campagnolo Record

    Tyres - Kenda Kriterium

    Total Weight - 9.2 Kg

(Parts listed to the best of my knowledge, but I'm no expert to feel free to correct me)

Many moons ago it once looked like this...

Ask any questions or PM me if you're interested.
    Cheers, David

  • You'll be lucky to get 200 quid i reckon

  • The original paint would probably help you get the best value. With that out of the way the frame has really low resale value. Campagnolo Record track (if they’re track) wheels should have a decent value, say 100-150£, depending on their condition. As mentioned above, probably 200-250£z

  • It looked better before. Sorry to say.

  • To max out the profit you need to split it, even down to the headset.....

  • The original paint job was nice, but by the time I was working on it there was way too much rust to save it so I (regrettably) went for the simple option.

£200 seems low, the pedals alone were £65. + wheels, brakes, etc.
I reckon I spent close to £500 on the individual parts, but as my first build probably wasn't the smoothest combination. I don't want to, but sounds like I'd be better breaking it down and selling the parts.

  • yea. I'm starting to realise that.

I guess it was quiet a personal project.
I specifically wanted a Raleigh, as I'm from Nottingham (where the factory is) and had Raleighs as a kid.
And from the 80's as thats when I was born.

And the parts were selected as stuff that I like the design of.

  • I'd keep it then.

If you are set on selling it, part it out.

  • what ^ he said...

[vulture_mode] but, eh, would be interested in the frame (no headset, BB, fork) if you do part it... [/vulture_mode]

  • Agree with Ecobeard,
And since the vultures are already circling I would love the pedals.

  • They're nice pedals. (I told myself they were my luxury as I loved the form)
Hey +mig, you could buy the whole bike, keep the pedals, and probably make some tidy profit on the parts! :P

I can't see myself being bothered to break it right down, and post out 20 individual parts, even if that would maxamise returns.
So if there's little interest on here I'll throw it to the wolves on eBay and see where it goes.

  • I love what you've done with it, personlly I would sell the frame and hold on to the parts and apply them to your next build, getting a better frame which the parts can add to its value ,

  • I like the personal connection, have you thought about selling off some of the track stuff and restoring the frame back to original? O.G white looked so good and people on here could point you towards some decent repro decal's. Would make a cool second project!

  • OG decals over current black would look pretty nifty even I reckon?

  • Now that is tempting! I always wanted to get the Raleigh logo and Reynolds decals back on.
But wasn't really after another project. The money was going towards a modern gravel bike.

+jono84, Does a re-spray + decals actually help value or is it more important to have the original factory paint?

  • agree, that would look good, you can get the decals here

  • No real value in a resto job and any increase would be completely lost in the cost of the work. I was suggesting it incase you considered keeping it. There's always a ceiling on the value of a bike like this no matter what you spend on it, especially when you deviate from original.

Best option returns wise would be to split it, live and learn and all that jazz.

  • Good find, but it does also say they are tough to apply to powder coat, especially matte finishes. DAM!

Have you ever done this +jazzythumper ?

  • Would look nice but decals over powder coat not the easiest.

  • Exactly. If it cost me £500 and I only get £300 for it, it doesn't matter. It was still fun to make and use.

  • I know you're not keen but if it is a pista crank I would be interested. Many thanks.

  • Those are Strada cranks

  • Okay, cheers!
