dog owners help me out, had a heated discussion with a work mate (says he is ex dog trainer) about the etiquette when you see a dog, I always ask the owner if it's ok to say hello pet the dog as you don't know if the dog wants contact or the owner, he was the oposiste saying he knows best he knows dogs blah blah blah but as a trainer I thought he should be even more respectful.
I don't own dogs never have is there an etiquette for saying hello to dogs ?
Sounds like a dick. Generally, a dog will decide who it wants to say hello to and it's pretty obvious, but you don't have a right to play with someone's dog anymore than you do their kid.
How would your colleague feel about a random stranger patting them on the back, rubbing their tummy or ruffling their hair? explain that you know best, his hair needed adjustment and you have rubbed peoples stomachs before.
He's being a dick, if you came up to me with my dog and did what you just described I would be happy enough, or even if she came up to you. If someone just came up and started trying to pet my dog with an assumption of 'knowing best' I would think they were a proper tool!
Nah, always ask. (Unless the dog has already approached you etc). Some dogs aren't sociable, don't like kids, don't like other dogs, are defensive on a lead etc etc. I'd always ask.
