  • Really happy with how this turned out. I had some paint left in the gun having painted up a frame so was scavenging around in the workshop to find a thing to paint. This was that thing.

    TVR flip-paint.

  • Quick question: I want to paint my black anodised 3T stem, gloss black. Do I need any specific type of primer?

Bonus, potentially stupid question: what happens if I just gloss-lacquer the anodised part, rather than strip the anodising off and prime/spray/lacquer? Would it just not adhere?

    Thanks!

  • Question for the painter boffins;
If I were hypothetically about to acquire a certain high end anodized alloy frame would it be possible to:

A - Strip the anodized finish off of the frame without compromising the integrity of the frame whatsoever?

B - Have the frame anodized again leaving a factory finish and also not compromising the integrity of the frame whatsoever?

C - If not B what would the weight penalty be like to have the stripped frame clear coated (possibly with a tinted lacquer to accommodate logo stencils)?

D - If none of the above how low could the weight penalty be for single colour over existing finish with stencilled logos and clearcoat?

  • RIP Dario Pegoretti.

One of the the biggest influences of mine in the craft I make my living from.

  • Looking at my frame now...

  • Somewhere on LFGSS I saw an unusual paint refurb where the painter had filled in lots of little chips on a frame with contrast colour blobs - ring a bell with anyone ? Can’t find it now and I fancy another look as I’m thinking of doing similar to tart up an old Marin - cheers

Could any of the paint pros (or amateurs) help me out please?
Since I posted that, I've read that hard anodisation is the best surface for paint?!

  • @hoops
Are there any scenarios where you have painted/been asked to paint a pro team bike, but not been allowed to disclose that it was your work? Where the underlying frame manufacturer has wanted the glory for themselves "Look at this amazing S-Works" rather than "Look at Hoops' amazing paintwork"?

  • Normally everything has to be kept under wraps until the bike is made public. I’ve not been involved in any projects where I have been made to specifically keep my involvement on the down low after the bikes release.

  • What kind of paint dud specialized use to make Sagan special paint on tarmac?
    Spectra Coat?
    Is this available somewhere

  • Got a link to that blue Alan?

  • Ta.

  • I'm painting up an old pompino at the moment, and wanted to stencil POMPINO onto the downtube.

My initial thinking was to use masking tape and cut out the text with an exacto knife. I thinks it's going to be too fragile though.

What material is normally used for stencils? As it's on a tube it feels like it should be sticky to prevent running, but more robust than masking tape.

What can I buy to help with this?

  • Why do you want to write blow job on the downtube?

  • It's to help endear the locals on my tour of Tuscany.

  • Unless you're keen for the rustic, cut by hand aesthetic I'd get someone to cut you some vinyl stencils:

    https://www.theprint.co.uk/paint-masking-stencils/

I've not actually used those guys but I think they're much of a muchness.

  • You need stencil vinyl which is effectively sticky backed plastic - there are MANY variables here.
You'll need application tape and a plotter in order to cut the precise shape you need.
Then you'll need a suitable vector file from which to create the stencil.

Free-hand cutting is done a lot but it can go wrong in many ways.

Drop me an email to colecoatingsworkshop@gmail.com.

If you can get to our workshop in SE London, I'd be more than happy to run you a couple of stencils and mount them on application paper for you in exchange for a packet of Hobnobs.

  • Really kind of you. I might just take you up on that. Will take me a few days to get everything in order, but I'll ping you a message next week.

  • Any reason why this wouldn't work? (I think this is how my early 90's Olmo is painted)

    1. Media blast or brush finish frame
    2. Full chrome (do not polish so it retains texture from step 1.)
    3. Clear coat with translucent colour
  • No key. You can get clear base coats which help, but that combined with shit modern paints will make it tricky.

  • I've done it with chrome in a bottle before and it worked well though, if your set on that finish.
