Campagnolo Croce d' Aune Graphite crankset

Posted on
  • Chainrings in top nick, and in full working mechanical order. The arms show signs of use, notably the finish has flaked off the non drive side arm around the pedal threads and crank bolt. Some scratches from shoe rub too.

    £50 > £40

Pick up from SE16 in the evenings or NW1 during the day.

  • Isn't it Athena?

  • Yep - believe so

  • What makes you guys say that?

    http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=3981dd93-9641-43bc-8636-7c27a46eed0c

I'm no Italian vintage expert so could be wrong

  • The Croce d'Aune and Chorus have much thinner spider arms than the Athena.

  • I am noob at all of this, but Campag “that’s not x it’s y” sales thread derailments never not funny : )

  • Ok my bad, I just matched the picture to velobase.

In that case, is my pricing off the mark?

  • ???? Is it better to let the op sell something which he has made a genuine mistake in describing and then get it returned when the buyer finds it erroneously described and have to lose the postage costs, time etc?
I can get a Campag Mirage groupo and sell it to you as C-Record real cheap if you like.

  • Pricing is decent. I've got about three of these graphite cranksets and it's hard to tell which is which. There is one in particular that has a slightly more raised lip around the crankbolts that is doing my head in trying to identify.

I wouldn't give two hoots about which type it was and I'm collecting them- You had me at Graphite

That being said, I don't really need a fourth one (unless the price drops to £40 and I can try and put it with all my graphite stuff and work out how many full groupsets I have!)

  • Scratch that, just realised they're Euclid (mine, not the ones above)

  • following

  • Price dropped to £40

  • Still got these. £30 now

  • I'll have them off you for £30. They can be added to the rest of the collection

  • Hey! Late to the "oh no it isn't party", but it may be useful for future reference.

Velobase can be a useful starting point, but all the content is user generated so not infallible. Amusingly the poster on VB mentions that CDA and Chorus/Athena are often confused, which is exactly what they've done (see comment at the bottom of the page).

CDA cranks are easily identified, because they're the cranks with self-extractors that aren't Record (four spider arms, fifth bolt behind crank).

CDA and (first gen.) Chorus are often confused because they are the same cranks: when CDA was binned, Chorus inherited the cranks. Second gen. Chorus has a raised lip (like a volcano) around the crank bolt, which I guess is what DFT mentioned above.

If it has five spider arms and is flat around the crank bolt then it's Athena or lower. I CBA to refresh my memory to confirm, but the difference between Athena and lower groups is purely the finish: cf. Xenon, which is painted rather than polished.

  • Nice one! Thank you : )

(also @Si46 - no side to my post, always harmless peanut gallery rubbish here...)

  • You're welcome!

I should start a "What Campag is this?" thread, judging by the amount of PM I get on the subject...

  • No worries -it's what forums are all about.
