Just to add, I know two political journalists at a major red top quite well. Both voted remain but write pro Brexit articles because that is what they are paid to do. They write what sells. It's depressing but that's the way it is.

The new DM editor (Geordie Greig) is strongly pro remain. I suspect that even the DM owners have realised that the writing is on the wall. Will be interesting to see how their position changes over time.
That's why I suspect a lot of Brexiters want the GE done before he takes over so that they stand a better chance of getting one of their own in.

I didn't realise this, cheers.

^^ DM readers want to be alternatively titillated and outraged - preferably at the same time.
The perfect DM story would be about an illegal immigrant turned suicide bomber who blew herself up in a playschool whom they have photographs of in a bikini. With a paragraph about house prices, cancer and Lady Di.

Ha, never implied anyone was lazy or unwilling.
Agree with most of your sentiments.

Ah well, we paid for his house anyway, didn't we. Some seven odd million that should have gone to some foodbanks seeing as Mogg admires them so much.

that's an amazing thread. And it is even worse than I knew :(

Apologies, I think I misinterpreted your post.
Edit:
You ask people to take charge of their own social mobility, but there isn't opportunity for everyone. The entire country can't move to London, Manchester, or Birmingham, and yes I completely accept that I am projecting my own view upon the country - that there are no opportunities outside of those 3 cities - but are there enough opportunities to provide the lifestyle dream that has been sold? No there aren't. That basically makes life unfair doesn't it? Which it is, and it's easy for us to say because we're either privileged enough to have been gifted access to opportunity, or lucky enough that our sacrifices have paid off and not ruined us.
Isn't that the crux of it? A lot of people have had their lives slowly turned upside down and they're unhappy and a bunch of people who haven't had to deal with that shit are telling them to deal with it.

How the fuck do you solve that?
-
• #12937
That requires a very complex answer - and one that will contain parts that people won’t/don’t want to listen too.
Brexit is easy- we leave, everything is sorted. Bosh!

Everyone gets a non means tested Citizens income.
How do you pay for that? Fuck knows.
- renege on a load of pension promises
- tax people or companies more
- discover a shit load of oil and a do a Norway not a Venezuela
- renege on a load of pension promises

How about a steady ramp to 90% tax on rental income.
-
• #12942
Wouldn't that fuck the entire housing market, and thus anyone who has saved and bought a house for themselves?
-
• #12943
There's plenty of comments like
most leavers are racists, to some extent ... Or idiots
remind me again why it is we're not allowed to call brexit voters thick fucking racists?which don't get called out. It's not all posters (but then again, people don't disagree).
Anyway, it looks like it's been debated a bit more sensibly since.

I imagine that there would be a correction, but there will be a correction when the pound drops below the Euro and we have food rationing and no jobs.
That to one side, we need to wean the country off rent-seeking behaviours and onto more productive means of making money.
i.e. if I have 50k I should invest it in a local company, or some local companies, or start my own little company rather than getting three BTL's and charging a fortune in rent.
Rent-seeking behaviour should be taxed heavily wherever it appears, making it unattractive.
The problem of course is that most MP's are landlords, and most entrenched money has a lot of property.

I came here to post this. It's the most succinct, incisive analysis I've seen of what's gone wrong. Here it is unrolled... https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1025630498431926272.html

You only need ONE house to live in, making a living from renting out a house with a paid off mortgage if you already have a house should be taxed way more imho.
Same for these property magnated that buy more and more houses as they have assets to loan against, pricing others out and increasing rents because whatchagonna do, private property rules.
-
• #12949
I think we should look to France and their rules around only permitting one mortgage per person. I.e you can't buy another place unless you've paid off the first one or buy in cash

I shall update my assertion to "28%" of MP's are landlords, based on your article.
Dacre is remaining (pun intended) as Editor-in-Chief of Associated Newspapers (notably this is a defunct subsidiary company) though, so don't expect him not to be pulling the strings from upstairs.
