  • Stephane might get -1 hour substracted from final time, for the time he waited after calling the ambulance for the crashed rider he found on day 2.

  • Cap #148 is currently enjoying R440.

  • Has managed 500m farther than Bjorn so far.

  • Oh bloody hell, he slept up there!

  • A few more points at 6kph (meaning more than an hour at 6kph) but the last few updates have been 9.6kph and 13.2kph, so likely he is rolling again, will have to see.

  • FML = fuck my life

  • Things sometimes look better in the morning...

  • @7ven how are you today?

  • Tailwind and slight downhill for miles on end does wonders to the morale. Fully back in the game. Without route failures there's 1690km to be ridden. (I'm not going to check the remaining elevation ;))

Well done Tom; when it has been really hard, the bits that are normally hard seem slightly easier!

  • There is some weird stuff going; #148 seemed to have to missed the turn off and is now going back to where he was! And I don't really get route choices from #143 and #12

  • Looks like 148 has made it through (ignore frrt's assumed reroute, obviously google maps doesn't think R440 is routable).

Once he's got to CP4 I'll try and work out how long it took him (taking out the sleep stop) and compare this to Bjorn's time. Obviously won't be a like-for-like comparison but still interesting.

Stephane has diverged from the route of Skinny and Bjorn after CP4, we'll see whether that gives Rene the advantage for third place.

  • Ah, I see re #148 - I was looking at frrt

  • And I don't really get route choices from #143 and #12

Yes, situation in third place has reversed: 158 (Rene) has now got onto the main road while it looks like Stephane (12) has routed off onto the lanes!
Most likely Stephane is going for the small border crossing which could save a little bit of overall climbing / distance rather than the main one that Skinny used, where Bjorn now is, and most other people will use, on the Tara Gorge.
There is a significant risk that Stephane might not get through that crossing and have to backtrack. ISTR he tried something similar in 2016 which ended in walking up a mountain carrying his bike...

  • Thomas Dupin has been stopped for 15 hrs. He was doing so good.

  • Just over 100 miles left for Skinny now

  • No better today so have scratched. Spoke to a doctor who didn't think it was feasible to tape it up for the rest of the ride. It is here atop this beautiful Polish mountain that I've hung up my hat. Pretty hard to sit there watching everyone else coming and going.

  • Sorry to hear that. Well done for getting that far!

  • You have done brilliantly, hold your head, as best you can, high with pride. Look at that view too!

  • Ah sorry dude that sucks! However massive massive congrats on getting that far. Hero!

  • Once he [148] has got to CP4 I'll try and work out how long it took him (taking out the sleep stop) and compare this to Bjorn's time. Obviously won't be a like-for-like comparison but still interesting.

    OK, quick comparison.

Bjorn took 22h27m to get from the R440 junction (to where he backtracked to) to CP4. 2h30 was spent attempting R440. 6h19m was spent resting somewhere just past the junction. I haven't taken into account any other stops.

So if Bjorn had not gone down R440 and not had the 6h19m rest he would have taken 13h38m to get from the junction to CP4.

Stephane has had an overnight rest of 8m46m and if I take that out he's taken 4h51m from the R440 junction to the main road at the other end of the R440. Someone else (cap#5) took 4h34 from that point to get to CP4. So the R440 route to CP4, without rests, will have taken ~9h30m (probably more as it looks like Stephane has stopped for food).

Take this with a pinch of salt though, different tyres may have meant that Stephane could ride more of R440 than Bjorn. With all things being equal though, sticking with R440 would most likely have been the faster route for Bjorn. Once you start considering other things (tyres, sleep, food, etc) then there are too many variables to say for sure.

  • Well done for making it so far! Nearly 2000km is a great feat.
I'm sure it'll feel bad now, but you'll be able to look back on this with pride.

    Sorry to hear it @7ven.

  • Look like Stephane #12 is going backward...

  • Ta, not sure the accuracy of frrt positions. 253b could be higher? Just as one example...
