every iphone i've owned was slow to the point of being unusable before my 2yr contract was up.
Delete the facebook app and turn off all the transition effects sorted this for me.

I'm still on an iPhone 5 (not a 5S, a 5). No FB app installed and it's fine for all I need.
Last iPhone I bought brand new was my first ever iPhone 3, everything else has been under £150 second hand from eBay usually every 2 years, can usually get £50-£75 for the old phone too.
Next one will be an iPhone SE once the prices come down a bit.
