yup - had them as a flat bar commuter - for the price, pretty good - dont expect high end performance, but for commuting - fine.

interesting, thanks. Worth switching from decent mechanical disc brakes like bb7s?
-
• #5154
Yes, but get deore instead.

Can even get 4 pot versions now.

Good stuff, thanks everyone!

Deore are excellent. Just don't bent the hoses as these are not reinforced like on higher models, will develop cracks and leak all over your calipers. Not that it happened to me last Sunday.

I thought shimano had 2 hoses they use and the difference is the bore and most recent stuff is the same.
-
• #5160
Looks like the lower end newer stuff is bh59 still rather than bh90. I knew there was a bore size difference, hadn't noticed bh90 being tougher though.

My xt seem to be more sturdy and stiffer than my plain deore. The difference is like between standard cable housing and jagwires compressionless.
-
• #5162
Changed the hoses to xt on my deore brakes. Kinda had to after perforating the original ones. Now they have even more stopping power and the lever doesn't sink all the way to the bars like it used to with the old hoses. Highly recommended.

Possibly the result of a better bleed too?
-
• #5164
Fully bled them after shortening the old hoses. But we will never know now.

Like, they may be tougher or something, but the actual, advertised, official shimano difference is that the two hoses have a slightly different bore, for slightly different designs in brakes. They may well work fine between the two with a different feel and all but in general I trust shimano over mine and other people's bodging, except with their stupid fucking coated cables.

We all make mistakes.

The bore size difference is 0.2mm. I'll make sure to report if it's fatal.
-
• #5170
Using the wrong size barbs for Shimano brakes can really affect them, badly.
-
• #5171
Fatal obviously isn't going to be a problem unless you're drinking from them and have filled them with DOT. More just sayin' that messing with one designed part of a hydraulic system will change one feature while affecting another (modulation/power/sex appeal) or, maybe it was set up shit the first time like Howard hinted hat.
-
• #5172
Obviously match barbs to hose, but then not both to other bits.
-
• #5173
While I'm chatting shit 0.2mm is about 10% right? Not insubstantial.
-
• #5174
You're right. Must have been a shit set up in the first place. Wouldn't be the first time.
After reading your comments I went back and checked the size of old and new inserts. Thankfully both are 2.1mm. There's no mix and match here. More luck than sense.
I've also checked shimano product page. As long as you get sm-bh90-xxx hose it'll work just fine with deore. For higher models you have to check the last 3 letters in the hose code. They specify the banjo, and banjo bolt type. Deore have straight connectors on both ends so you can just chop off the bonjo.
I've learned more about disc brakes today than I intend. Thanks. -

chop off the bonjo
Ow.
Clarks M2 Hydraulic brakes...anyone had any experience with them?
