Thomas Hoffman has scratched due to the weather. Said he drank 11l of water yesterday along with rehydration tablets and still suffering. Sounds rough.

I'm really in no position to judge, but it's possible drinking 11 litres of water may do more harm than good.

Definitely possible. From Wikipedia:
- 1991, Andy Warhol: Five years after his death, Warhol's family publicly accused the hospital where he had his gallbladder removed of causing his death by water intoxication administered post-operatively. A claimed autopsy weight of 150 lbs, with his weight being 128 lbs when admitted, was cited as evidence that too much fluid has been given.
- October 24, 1995: Anna Wood, a 15-year-old Australian schoolgirl, died from the effects of water intoxication secondary to use of MDMA (commonly known as Ecstasy).
- November 16, 1995: Leah Betts, an English schoolgirl, died as the result of drinking too much water, though in the media her death was mistakenly attributed to taking an ecstasy tablet at her 18th birthday party. [drank 7 litres in 90 minutes]
- 2003: British actor Anthony Andrews survived a case of water intoxication. He was performing as Henry Higgins in a revival of the musical My Fair Lady at the time, and consumed up to eight litres of water a day. He was unconscious and in intensive care for three days.
- January 12, 2007: Jennifer Strange died after drinking what is believed to be 2 gallons (7.5 liters) of water in an attempt to win a Nintendo Wii. The KDND radio station's morning show, the Morning Rave, held an on-air contest entitled "Hold Your Wee for a Wii," in which contestants were asked to drink as much water as they could without urinating. KDND was subsequently ordered to pay US$16,577,118 in damages to Jennifer's family.
Obviously he's doing a lot of sweating, but may have overdone it?

My first wife once had a fit from drinking too much water (trying to combat side effects from drugs she had to take).
11l should be ok if he drunk it spread over the day and had enough electrolytes.
If he necked 3-4 litres at once, that would cause issues.

Yep, with a lot of exercise I can see it may be fine - I have no expertise on this but 11l seems a shitload - in weight it's like 11KG. Be interested to see what sort of volumes of fluids other riders are consuming.
Also, Bernd Paul seems to have stopped/hit a snails pace for most of the day. Tracker issues, or is he resting?

I remember watching that. What an incredible comeback!

Don't... tempt... me... :-)
Every year I've followed this race I've developed a strong longing to ride it but I sadly have approximately zero confidence in my ability to finish it.

1 litre per hour when it is hot is not unusual. A bit less when it is cooler - evening / morning.
20 litres in a day sounds like the upper edge of what is safe. I wouldn't normally count it - maybe Skinny is just guesstimating? You just monitor it with the colour (or absence) of pee. Drink more if it's too dark or you haven't done one for hours - drink less if it's clear.IME the main challenge is to dial back drinking in the evening when you stop sweating. I've got that wrong on some rides had had to pee ridiculous amounts in the first half of the night.

Just to add to Anisa'a story. After the Nordkapp Tarifa she dropped her bike at my place for a service. I planned to swap brake pads tyres chain pedals headset bearings and brake pads among other things. Before I had done any of it she said she wanted it as she was planning to ride to Geraardsbergen at the weekend, and would bring it back the following week. I just put new bar tape on, sorted out the front mech, and oiled the chain and she grabbed it and left. She had to be back by Monday as she had changed jobs before her last race, had to work her notice and start her new job.
She then messaged me from the TCR start saying she could have a start if she wanted, she had no route, no tri bars, no feeling or strength in her left hand and had to ride most of the way from the ferry out of the saddle dues to a sore backside from 7300 kms of racing over the three weeks prior. She was so excited at the prospect she went for it, and has now past CP1. Her right hand shifter has failed, and she has elastic bands to hold it in gear for climbing. She has no tape on the tri bars so her hand isn't recovering and she has to use her right hand to change from the inner to outer ring with the left shifter.

If they are drinking that much then I would say that a key concern would be to maintain electrolytes.
There are twin conditions Hyper and Hyponatremia which relate to too high or too low concentrations of sodium in the blood. Hypernatremia can be caused through high levels of sweating, and Hyponatremia can be caused by excessive intake of water, and I believe is commonly associated with people trying to rehydrate with water too quickly after a period of dehydration.
If I recall correctly there have been several instances of people getting very sick (sometimes fatally) from Hyponatremia after hot running races if they fail to rehydrate sensibly. I've had the latter at least once (after a half marathon in extreme heat) and it isn't pleasant but given that I didn't die I probably had a pretty mild case.
Stay safe everyone.

Following Hippy's route from a couple of years ago?
-
• #1694
I do hope she finds another bike shop before long that can help her fix all that. Bar tape shouldn't be the hardest thing to get in the wild. Nails+. I just hope her new boss(es) see her, erm, single-mindedness as an asset in a new employee rather than a problem, even if she'll now be starting a bit later ...

Hippy dropped out of the alps around Milan IIRC so skipped a lot of the hills. I can imagine her turning left past Bolzano and rejoining the more popular route, I don't think heading much further south would make much sense.

Three riders (won't give #'s here) are showing No Points Yet, with no dot visible and blank "full history" links. Freeroute doesn't have them either. Would a failed tracker temporarily hide everything like this?

I find it hard to see how she can make things easier for herself that way, but she must have some reason.

I think the crater has now filled up and is a huge lake.

Sometimes you read something and it gives you physical pain--from the second race report:
Innes Ogilvie arrived at CP1 at 8:49pm and swiftly headed back out and up the mountain. But 12 hairpins from the top he heard a loud crack from his knee. He almost walked the rest so he could descend the other side of the pass but decided to return to Control. On the ride back he wasn’t able to keep his shoes clipped-in on even the smallest of climbs because of the pain. No sign of him yet this morning.
Hope he gets better or takes the sensible decision to abandon.

That's my pal. He's gonna struggle on for a bit but it is sounding like his race is over. He thinks its his MCL
Real shame as he was going pretty well.
Yes he was flying. I saw him when he was stopped at CP1, then he passed me leaving CP2 - basically taken a day out of me in about 1200km!
He came 4th but would probably have got 3rd if he'd not damaged his wheel.
