Currently mired in camera choice. I work in documentary/ factual TV and have just gone freelance. Done a lot of development and production but have a gaping hole in shooting skills despite a couple of C300II courses with work.
Taking advantage of having just quit to go on a little bike down and across the US with a mate, and plan to make a little film of it for posterity but also to use as a showreel ‘going forward’ to use for all those shooting AP gigs.
So, currently geeking out on cameras. I’ve bought an SLR before but ended up just using my iPhone on trips, so I want something small because I’ll end up using it more. Also needs to be fairly robust, decent battery, ideally shoot 1080 (no need for 4K), and a bit of stabilisation would be good.
Audio is something I’m happy to sacrifice on for now to hit my budget - whilst it would be nice to have audio in and out for my own rig, any job almost always rents cameras for you so no real need.
Got a budget around 500, willing to flex stuff which will do me well over a longer period.
Current options:
Panasonic GX80 (bargainous, good stabilisation - current front runner. Unsure which lens to use if bought body only from MBP, for 99 extra can be bought new with 12-32 kit lens)
Panasonic G80 (as above but weather sealed)
Sony A6300 (nicer image, audio in, sealed, in the Sony ecosystem and a lot of stuff is shot on FS7 in my field)
Panasonic Gh3 (cheap at 300 from MBP, could build into a nice little rig on budget, shoots nice 1080)
iPhone X/8 (always to hand, backup to cloud over longer trips, easy to keep charged, can go through rushes and slim down whilst on the road as I won’t have a laptop, will upgrade my phone anyway, can spread cost)
Or do I just shell out on a GH5, A7s?
@CYOA I have a feeling you might be the one with the knowledge!
