  • I did a bit of tramping Monday night. Done a little write up here. All squished in between work finishing on Monday and starting on Tuesday. Could be some inspiration for a lfgss team trip...

  • Room for one more?

Can bring a spacious 3 person + gear tipi tent outer (<1kg and very compact so no worries lugging that) in case weather is crap. Or bivi under the stars preferred.

    Cooking/water boiling paraphernalia.

Happy to help with navigation -- sounds like you will know more at the planning stage, but I'm okay with actually calling out the turns as we go.

  • of course! would be great to have you along
for now just blank out the date, and we'll figure out the rest at the start of sept

  • Up for any of the above.

  • This sounds ace! In if you'll have me.

  • Good news! The more the merrier, particularly organised types! I'm off 15/16th September, but would need to be home by 6am on the 17th as I'm back on duty.
Little overnighters, or epics are all good!
I've only got my hammock set up or bivvy set up at the moment, as I threw the tent in the bin after my last usage......it was only a £10 Aldi one, but too many hits had broken!
This was me the last couple of nights...

  • I’ll loiter here and may jump on a ride.

  • Wouldn't mind joining in if I get my act together and get my kit sorted? Not bikepacked before

  • absolutely, so long as you have a positive attitude, well functioning bike and body, you are welcome :)

  • Anyone up for doing anything sooner than September when the weather is still so good?

I've got a nice route that heads towards Bishop Stortford or another that goes out along the Stort.

Just a little 1 night. Sick sitting in the house on these nice evenings.

  • I'd be up for it mid August.

  • Yeah I'd be keen, weather is banging at the moment

  • Very late notice but I'm going to head out tomorrow night. Leaving from near Tottenham Hale around 5pm tomorrow. Routes attached if anyone is keen.

  • I've just seen this! You virtually ride past me! Trouble is, I'm on my way to Epping now! You never know, I might pop by your campsite later to say hi!!😂

  • Presumably in this weather its warm enough to sleep out without any bag/tent/bivvi etc. Couple of warm layers and beer is enough?

  • I thought that a few weekends ago and regretted it. Take a bag.

  • Depends where you are; if it's exposed and the wind whips up at 3am and you've been lying still for 5 hours, it could be unpleasant, but you'd obviously live.

I like to err on the side of caution in these matters :)

  • I am at this moment packing my trowel in panniers ready for 3days in Saafuk & Naarfuk.

Hope you other ditchshitters bury your shit yeah?

  • didnt stay out in the end (was 10 minutes from home so easy to get back). left at 11pm
forgot extra layer, couldnt find headgear to keep off bugs

what i learned was that i dont need the inflatable pillow (can use backpack), but definitely need a mat and some kind of cover. more snacks would have been good.

  • I didn't get the chance to swing by, but I did find a vintage tent at the dump! I'll be testing it in the next couple of days....any other rides planned?
And Skully, I tend to get a shy shitter when only away for two or three days....when I get home though! Boom!

  • Had a nice run out Lea Valley then river Stort. Got as far as hainault forest last night and set hammock up deep in the woods. Sleeping bag was used and needed.

Took the filtchway this morning as far as Braintree with breakfast in great Dunmow. The ride home was much slower as I skirted and crossed a lot of rough fields but was beautiful.

  • Nice! Just as well I didn't go looking for you near dunmow last night!👍

  • 100% in for any London based bikepacking activities!

  • Looking for somewhere to camp, within 40k from east London.

    Any suggestions?

  • So, totally creeping this thread looking for options, me and a mate ended up doing a bit of a 24 hour special - he trashed his feet on a recent walking holiday in old boots so wasn't up for big mileage, but we did ~30 miles after getting the train to Colchester, lovely cycing around the Dedham Vale, really keen to go back and explore that. Should probably have checked the route a bit better before we set off but there you go...

Not many pubs in that part of the world so I recommend looking them up and plotting the route accordingly if you're inclined towards thirst. It's not look like Cotswolds/South Downs etc where there's a pub in every village/hamlet.

Cycled through Ipswich, which for some reason I hadn't expected to be so boaty. It was nice. We had a nice beer in the centre.

Easy ride out of the city then a gentle ~3 miles to the Nacton picnic area (just past Orwell School) which has access out to the 'beach'. Mild disappointment that it's not a 'swimmy' beach, but really lovely spot, you get the smell and (distant) sound of the sea and general salty proximity.

Chose a nice spot (on a sandy 'scoop' down from the footpath to the shore), about 300 yards if you came down from the car park and walked left along the footpath. Gathered some wood for the evening then headed up to the Ship at Livington. Really lovely pub, thoroughly recommend, food was great. The walk took about 15/20 mins along the front, the ride is about 7 mins on the roads. Came back, had fire, drank various strange spirits, went to sleep. Thoroughly pleasant experience. Got up early (some friendly hellos with dog walkers) and rode to Felixstowe for a bracing swim. Back on the 11am train and in the office for 12.30pm!
