I think it's spot on, what would the EU gain by allowing us to kick the can down the road for another 3 months? Nothing other than more chaotic posturing in place of negotiation.

If there was a genuine game-changer such as an election then that's a good reason - but giving us more time to be useless in? That's not a good reason.

Pretty sure the EU care little as to who the UK populace blame for a no deal Brexit.

I suspect that Barnier et al know that there is nothing they can do that will not be written up as malicious by the UK press, which actually takes the pressure off them.

Actually, I did once go to a fancy dress party as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. It was a Bond-themed party, so all the blokes just put on DJs and went as Bond, and all the ladies just wore flouncy dresses and chose their favourite Bond girl. Except I went as Blofeld (cream Nehru suit, bald wig, SPECTRE ring), and @Cycliste went as the cat.
