  • Here it is on the frame, might need to jimmy the bolt in after 'moulding' the band to the tube.

    Slowly getting there....

Only thing I'm struggling to find any choices on are the rims

  • Beautiful, my gf always told me it looks like a piece of jewelry.

  • Cleaned up a few parts last night and found a few issues....

My Record hubs (that I have definitely) had my money's worth from) are probably best retired due to some cracks that have started to spread around the flanges. So I think they are destined to be ornaments/paperweights.

I'm also not entirely convinced that my 73 NR rear mech is completely 'true' as despite a complete rebuild, it's still not sitting/working correctly.

So that's a rear mech and a wheel set on the list, although finding a wheel set should be easier than just finding the right rims.

  • Pat 74 Rear mech and cable housing just arrived from Switzerland

Need to collect a packet from PO too with more bits.

    Slowly coming together

  • Coming along nicely, what parts are you still after?
Saw your old chrome one this morning? still looks great you'll be glad to hear

  • Ace! Is it still with Adam?

Lovely bike that, sad to move it on but glad it went to someone who loves and uses it.

I still need (all 70's NR)

    • seat pin
    • Brook Comp
    • pedals
    • cages
    • Wheels (27's)
  • @SideshowBob just sent me this little beauty off of eBay.

It has some lovely details that are the same as on my Minster and @alanelsegood 's. it also has another new headbadge design! :)

Worth an offer from someone who could us it I would have thought?

  • Very interesting thread regarding Elsegood frames. I have just bought , subject to payment on collection, the red A E Elsegood frame that was pictured on the thread a few days ago. Its too small for me but would probably suit my wife who is also a cyclist and would be thrilled to ride an Elsegood frame in the Eroica or similar , afterall she has been an Elsegood since I married her many years ago. It maybe stuff and nonsense to feel that its just that little bit more special to ride a bike built by an Elsegood who will probably be a distant , distant relation , but nonetheless I'm quite excited to get my hands on it.
Unfortunately my hands can fix and tweak bikes from as early as the 1980's ( my Ribble/Dolan frame of mid 1980's is my oldest) but these older vintage models might just be a mystery too far but we'll see. There are more oldtimers in my cycling club who I think and hope will be keen to do help and do it justice.
Just thought I'd update you as the bike was mentioned in the thread so you know what is happening to it. If interested I'll keep you posted and maybe you can lend me some advice.
I noted alanelsegood@gmail.com has contributed to the thread - I wonder if this is the same Alan Elsegood who contributes to the Elsegood Family History facebook site- you never know - we aint't that common afterall.

    Regards Mark Elsegood - markelsegood@tiscali.co.uk

  • Wonderful

Great buy and lovely that it's your namesake, I hope it is the same @alanelsegood that posts on your family forum, would be a nice tie up.

Please keep us posted on the bike build, I for one would be very interested in the build. I would have pumped for it myself but it was too small for me and my wife.

You should give the build a go yourself you know, if you'be ferried bikes in the 80's, this will be very similar.

    Look forward to seeing more

    Ta

    Rob

  • Really pleased to have come across the posts on here. I got my first 'racing bike' (sadly not a Minster - not even from Elsegoods) from my parents Christmas 1963 and after several hundred miles on my own that winter, by February wanted to join a cycling club. As my Gran lived off Lord Mayor's Walk I knew of Elsegood's shop and went in to ask how to join a club. Arnold took me under his wing and for a few months I went out with the Ebor CC. Then one day Arnold said the Ebor was an old man's club now and on it's way out and that I'd be better with the more lively Clifton Cc (where another great old York clubman Bernard Wood took me under his wing). They were fine days. I'm still riding, still keen.
Great to see there are still some of Arnold's frames about. He was a really kind friendly man fondly remembered.

  • Great to hear and even better to hear that you are still riding!

Did you even own an Elsegood?

Your post inspired me to get back on the hunt for bits for mine and I finally took the plunge on a NR seat post on eBay.

Wheels are proving to be the biggest challenge atm.

  • I love this forum. Looking through CP to look at bar tape choices on vintage bikes (going Fizik as it looks fine here) and came across this lovely thread.

  • A decently priced 2 bolt seat post arrived today. Needs a quick polish, but very good condition for a tenner.

I have been waiting for a while to find the parts that are 'just right' for my minds eye, so this means that progress is excruciatingly slow :)

It also means that the cash should go a little further on the bits like pedals and wheels when the right ones appear.

Can't remember what bits I have and what I still need, but it's in the stand and tinkering can begin, again!

    23inch c-t

Make a lovely project for someone, if they can collect from Taunton

  • And how's your build going?

  • Slowly

I popped the B.B. in today, properly

I just need cables and some time and it will be built!

  • I see your latest pic shows the band on BB cable guide missing, I guess you are going onuse some lengths of cable outer in the cable stops instead. :)

Colour looks fab :). Is it a rebadged Carlton Flyer?

  • It’s an Elsegood

Loads of info in the early part of this thread trying to work out what the frame wasn’t.

@alanelsegood confirmed some features and Ellis Briggs also confirmed (when working on another Elsegood I had that was similar) thy they wouldn’t repaint anything as an Elsegood, that wasn't one of Arnold’s.

There are cable stops on the DT and the DS Chain stay, so yeah little loop over B.B.

I have a load of guides I can try though, as pictured above, if I’m that way inclined.

  • Some real nice kit going on there, holes in the headset cups :). Does a magnet stick to your pedal spindles.

Being a rider of the 70's there might be some problems using a brand new chain and a used block, if it skips then a nos block might be in order. :)
