  • ....however if it is a single colour you can get powder coat in matte and it will be stronger than any 2k paint us slags can supply you with, at a fraction of the cost.

  • If you just wanted the toughest finish around for a beater bike, what would the best option be - powder coat of some kind?

  • I thought the stuff available to the general public wasn't as tough these days (stupid 'not wanting to give everyone cancer'...)

  • Ah that’s a shame

  • 100% Powder is stronger than any wet application product.

Armourtex is back up and running in East London.

I can't imagine it's more than a oner for a frame and fork.

  • It's just the name, not the original firm. Arun finishes is run by Steve from armoured classic, there's been patchy reports of the 'new' armortex.

  • Thanks for that.
I didn't quite understand what had happened.tgere are currently two Armoutexes too right?

I'd suggest "patchy" was perhaps an appropriate adjective for the previous incarnation too. Of the six framesets I had done, none were without issue wether it were in relation to the finish or the poor treatment of the frame. One was even finished without removing a BB cup.

  • Thanks a lot for that, yes, no fancy mixture of colours here. I’m simply after that old green army truck look for a new winter/cross/touring bike. I guess powder coat matte it is!

  • Been working on a lot of stuff I’m not able to share just yet recently, so have been a little quiet on the sharing of current projects front. Am getting a few other non confidential projects out the way this week and next though.

    Fun little project from today...
“Can you paint a stem to look like a Braeburn Apple”

Strangest request in a while, but actually had pretty good fun knocking this out this morning. Brought back fond/horrific memories of my propmaking days many years ago.

Going on an all black custom carbon Appleman cycles build that needed a splash of colour, hence the apple theme:

  • Nailed it

  • Saw that on insta - unreal!!!

  • Noob question to paint pros

I’ve just given the TCX a good coat of Spray.Bike (I know I know - I’m too impatient and trying not to spend much money on it to get a proper paint job)

Do I give it a fine sand before applying the “transparent finish” to even out the slight roughness of the paint?

  • Very much an amateur, but I would add another coat of colour, or sand any blotches then add another coat rather than sanding before clear.
(I may well be corrected and told off by a pro)

  • Balls - I added another coat and now have run out of paint!

Guess I’m gonna have to just Clearcoat and see!!

I’m shying away from any sanding right now as the paint finish is clean and dust free - I don’t want to introduce and more dust or debris.

Not too bothered about perfection (for once) - just don’t want it to look completely shite!

  • I'm sure it will be fine - if it is crappy you can always sand off the clear and buy another can

  • Did you sand it? What happened? I would expect that it doesn't withstand serious sanding and you would just strip it straight off again. The instructions suggest brushing it down or something similar. If you clear coat it, it should get a bit glossy, but by nature it's rather rough and porous so many many coats would be needed to build up something that really protects it.

  • Didn’t sand

Applied two layers & 2 cans of “top coat”

Pretty happy with the end result

Quite rightly as you said - it was very rough and very powdery, but the top coat seems to have sealed at least some of that in.

I actually quite like the rough matte/satin finish.

    Let’s see how it weathers.....

  • Hey guys I’m new here today and am interested in learning how to properly spray my bike, do you know any good resources to check out??

  • Cole coatings do a course

  • What he said.

We've had many people through the doors.

Some top framebuilders looking to improve their knowledge or take their processes in house, a few people just looking for a fun thing to learn, many Bicycle Academy Graduates...

You'll walk away with a pro-level finish and the knowledge to do it again if you take appropriate notes.
