It's likely that local parks to you have been mapped for orienteering . You might notice control posts dotted around:

South Yorkshire Orienteers have been running a series of local/schools events, courses range from 1-5km I think. Landslide Jr and I have run loads of them, they've been great fun. Might be something similar in your area?
