Why not a bodged triple? Chainline?

Washer more likely, if you got any old chainring with you, just cut off the bolt area like I did.

Going to have a crack at the bolts with a file instead, much less annoying than busting out my Dremel at 11:30 PM

Triple work well, I just like a dedicated chainset where shifting likely to be optimised with the correct ramp and pin, especially off road.

46/30 with standard ring work cause it’s the smallest I can go with a normal road front derailleur, any smaller mean the derailleur won’t wrap round the chainring well and the angle of the cable (as it set much lower to the B.B.) likely to affect the shifting feedback.

Honestly, I think 46/30 work well for you especially with a load.

Having said that it's probably cheaper to go for wolftooth/wheel manufacturing drop out extender and run a 11-42t with a 40t chainring.

Cheers Ed, my preference would be the biggest cassette and running a single chainring. I thought a road link allows a max rear cog of 40T (not 42T) which I suspect may not be enough.

spreadsheets are sexy.

I use a roadlink with an 11-42, no problems.

The roadlink are rated for the max safety limit to prevent people from pushing it.

Alternatively you can get the new Ultegra R8000 or 105 R7000 derailleur that go up to 11-34 (Ultegra RX sound better suited), this mean you might actually go 11-44t instead, or even 11-46t.

I am building up a CdF.

I think the 6600 cranks were £35 delivered. Need to get the SPA chainrings, it will look anti but I don't care.

@slothy @edscoble I'm slowly learning manufacturers understandably play it safe when quoting range compatibility. This could make a difference. My next question is what 42/44/46t cog or cassette can I put on my Shimano 11sp road freehub body?

Thanks also Ed for mentioning about the new breed of Shimano rear mechs, trying the Road Link first like you say might be cheaper but good to know.

You'd have to use a mtb cassette + spacer (1.85mm I think?), quite a few options out there, shimano, sunrace etc. Personally, I used a cheap sunshine cassette from aliexpress ($23), weighs 500g and wears rather quickly.

It's more the length of the derailleur hanger, Shimano rated their with the shortest derailleur cage out there (they somehow missed the CAAD12 one which is even shorter), so any bike like the Specialized Sequoia with it's longer derailleur hanger can actually have a long cage 5800 derailleur with a Sunrace 11-36t cassette.

After a quick spin round the block shifting is good, and that's without any adjustment other than sliding that sucker onto the freehub. In the highest gear (42t x 34t) it's 22 gear inches, which obviously is spinney so considering going back to single chainring (40t).

Noooo keep the double! Just convince your friends to ride up a 30% slope with touring gear and laugh as you spin past them at 4kph!

When will you ever use 50x11 on this? Go sub-compact, you can go all silver plus it will be so much more lighter.

@frankenbike when out for a spin it did make me want to find the steepest hill and ride up it.

@amey those cranks look good, and you're right I'm never going to use 50x11. Probably would buy sub compact rings but not sure there's many options with these new Shimano 4 bolt cranks.

What I think will happen is I'll go back to 1X now the cassette is bigger and on the few times a year I do any proper touring I'll just fit a smaller chainring.

There is absolute black but they are ugly and expensive, plenty of cheaper and better looking ways to go sub-compact. Compared to 1x it will give you less gappy cassette.

Baller option is white ind.

The pragmatic choice. Also, double full silver 5800 isn't pretty, despite the rest of the bike being gorgeous. Surely needs a tubus tara too??

I'd recommend either 46t or 44t.
