  • Heretic! 26mm drop bars on a 26,4 Cinelli XA stem...

    Coke shim 🤫

    What rims? headset?

Open pro 4 cd laced to campag 😮 8speed hubs. Tange allez

    6207 crankset?

Yeah, had a set laying around and they’re prettier than the 105 set.

The whole build was done as cheaply as possible. I only spent money on the drops and bartape. Everything else is parts bin scavenging

  • Think i asked you about your Salsa stem sometime ago on the overground? Bike is lovely.

  • Yes, done a couple of Cinelli 1As. Wet sanded the ano off with 360 grit paper, then repeat with 1200 grit to get it smooth, then polished up with Autosol.

I did try the Mr Muscle oven cleaner (sodium hydroxide) in a plastic bag method to strip the anodise, but it didn't seem to touch it.

  • Howling V brakes: how do I stop them making so much noise? They are Shimano DX with I can't remember what pads in them. They don't seem to have any angle adjustment. Alloy wheel with machined braking surface. Pads have been mounted for about a year and never used. Is this the problem?

  • How do you know it's a 26.4 clamp size?

Old school Cinelli stems; 'weird' size. I use the same exact stem with 26.0mm bars (no shim), works perfectly.

  • I have the same problem, commenting so I can find this later

I suspect toe-in is the problem

Edit: actually it's Current Projects, I didn't really need any help finding this later

  • I just watched a video with a good tip to get some toe in, which is to place a penny between the rim and the back of the pad, pull the brake on and tighten the pad.

Being as I haven't used the pads for a year, I'm going to give them a quick roughen up with a bit of emery as well.

[yeah yeah, I know, should have just Googled this all in the first place...]

  • Let me know if that sorts it!

  • I remember! Cheers man

  • Cheers man! I remember ya!

  • Old loyalty card works really nicely, a penny might be a bit thick.
Better pads also help. If they're salmon (ie wet weather) ones then they're gonna squeal a bit in the dry whatever.

  • Is anyone selling a decent front brake caliper or some wide (700mm+) silver risers in 25.4mm or 26mm? Giving my Donohue a bit of a makeover! (I'm based in Leeds but can pay for postage).

  • Still didnt answer my question ;)

Other pages on Velobase may give the answer you want, since the XA seems to have been made in many different permutations of [26.0|26.4 bar][22.2|22.0 quill][wedge|cone expander]. Between all that and the choice of silver or black plus 5mm length increments in the mid range, there must be well over 100 distinct XA stems :)

  • No, what I meant is why did Gaston assume it was a 26.4 mm clamp stem? I’m pretty sure he just didn’t know a 26.0 version exsisted and I was on my way to tell him, but Tijs interrupted making the same assumption that these came as 26.4 only.

As from my (very limited) experience sellers may say they’re 26.0 but in fact they turn out to be 26.4 anyways :P

  • Cinelli was 26,4 sins mid 90' and the rare 26,0 doesn't make the crushed bottom part due to incompatibility there.

From my experience the only Cinelli vintage stem in 26,0 that I saw was a first generation 1A

    I have a 21,8 quill 1R and a 26,8 Clamp Criterium bars...

  • Steel fork? I had this. No matter what I did nothing would fix it. Fitted one of these in the end and it was fine.

  • Didn’t mean to cause so much contention with my frankencockpit.

  • I've taken a fork and headset from one frame to another - it worked fine before and has the same measurements but now when fitted can barely turn the fork. Anybody have any ideas on troubleshooting? Only thing I can think of is that I could have damaged/slightly ovalised the cup when fitting

  • Overtightened?

  • <3

same problem there (not my bike)

  • No, even without a stem. Seems like the steerer is rubbing on the inner part of the cup, might have to try a different headset

  • Aluminium.

I just deglazed the pads and they’re still quite soft. Did the penny trick and both sides are landing front-first. Still squealing, so I’m going to nip up the headset but I think you might be right that it’s the fork resonating. Different pad probably means different friction which means different resonant frequency- ie you get lucky and it doesn’t howl!

  • Could just be a contaminated brake track after cleaning/greasing. I have mini-vs and a couple of times after cleaning my wheels I've had ridiculous squeal for an hour or two of riding. Settles down after while though.

  • well.. this happened.
