  • Wonderful, thanks for that!

  • I’ve always used co2 to get my tires up to pressure as my pump isn’t up to much. Probably need a better pump. Running 28s these days so gone are the days of running 100 psi anyway...

  • I also have the Lezyne one, it works very well.

  • I want an adjustable spanner that is slim enough to tighten a headset (under a second spanner), pedals, cones, etc. - does such a thing exist? I'd prefer a single adjustable one to a set of rigid ones really as I don't have the space in my meagre toolbox.

Something like this but, ahem, cheaper if possible. Or if I have to spend that much, a bit of reassurance that it won't be totally shit.

Expected response: "get non-adjustable ones you pillock"

  • does such a thing exist?

Yes, but since the slide and worm are as thick as a normal adjustable spanner, it will take up just as much space in your tool box as a #tester_approved pile of individual cone spanners.

  • Dangit. Now I have to decide which spanners I really need.

What's the cheapest approved 32mm (or 30mm?) headset spanner then? And spanners for hub cones/nuts, and pedals?

I will assume that I'll never have to deal with a threaded 1 1/8" headset but if those ones that fits 4 sizes of headset nut are okay that'd be good

  • approved 32mm (or 30mm?) headset spanner then? And spanners for hub cones/nuts, and pedals?

Cyclo do all the sizes, they're cheap and plenty good enough for home use. It's not clear what Park and VAR bring to the table apart from double the price.

  • Cheapest one I can find is this which isn't very cheap, and only a pound or two cheaper than Park.

Oh well, it'll do the job, and the pin thing will be useful for those stupid BBs that need one. Can manage on pedals and hubs for now.

Edit: Forum breaks my link. Here it is https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cyclo-32mm-Head-Bottom-Bracket-Adjustable-Cup-Spanner-/122937397796

For future reference for anyone else who wants one

  • Yeah, works if I copy and paste it in, but not if I click on it from the forum, or even if I drag the highlighted text from the forum to open a new tab. Odd.

  • Broken links aside, you will find that not all headsets are the same size. If you want a pin spanner then I actually would recommend the park one purely because the springiness of it keeps it in place slightly/allows for slightly different sizes.

  • And now it works. How odd.

(unless you changed something you sly devil you)

  • I just checked the two I need to adjust, they're both 32mm. But yeah, the fact that they're all different (everyone loves how often the bicycle industry changes standards) is why I wanted an adjustable one. But I don't think I'll be owning a 1 1/8" threaded 36mm headset any time soon and if I am I guess I'll just borrow a tool

and yes, I got it to work before I saw your comment :)

  • Just buy value (ie not chinesium) spanners in the right size as you need. Much easier.
Don't bother with fancy grips, they just take up space!

If you were nearer (you're Edinburgh right?) I'd offer to lend you the one you need!

  • Yeah, Edinburgh. There is actually a shop nearby that'd charge me literally pennies for the 1 minute job of tightening the headset up, so I can always go in there, but I tend to fix my bikes last thing at night and the shop is only open Tuesday - Saturday at normal working hours, so no good if I'm riding in to work Monday morning and my headset's loose (as it was this morning). If I do have to adjust a 1 1/8 headset it'll be a friend's bike or something and not a late night job, so think I should be mostly covered with a 32mm. Plus I could always do the 1-spanner method with my fat adjustable one if I have to

Kind of you to offer though, thanks :)

  • Please recommend me a bog standard 27.2 set back seatpost. Would ideally have 30 - 40 mm setback.

To go on my day to day Bob Jackson frame so cannot be carbon. Selection online feels a bit random, So far I have looked at the expensive J&L, a medium priced Deda, the Kalloy options doesn't seem to offer much setback... etc.

  • Is there a tester approved chamois cream?

  • bog standard 27.2 set back seatpost. Would ideally have 30 - 40 mm setback

Kalloy SP-602 has 30mm set back, whichis5-10mm more than most of the other Kalloy posts

  • tester approved chamois cream?

https://udderlysmooth.co.uk/ on the rare occasions that I actually use it.

  • "Melt-forged head"

  • What is the go to 1" threadless headset, the bike is ridden daily would prefer black?
    Thanks
