Youโre sending a signal to change gear, itโs not rocket science. Shimano should be embarrassed they havenโt gone wireless yet.
-
• #3203
I think that SRAM's first effort at wireless is pretty damn impressive and with servo and battery improvements seamingly daily, range won't really be an issue.
In fairness, it is a very small proportion of cyclists who would need the battery capacity you need ;)
-
• #3204
I hardly think the issue is that it's beyond them, perhaps they're not happy with the compromises. Like I said, I don't want it if it's half the battery life.

Agreed ๐๐

I think you'll find that, by mass, it's a very large proportion.

SRAM own the patent for wireless shifting so you won't see a Shimano one anytime soon.
If anything it'll be a semi wireless like the FSA set-up.

Well you learn something new every day!

Surely that must be limited, though - i.e. Wireless shifting using certain protocols, or something?
Hard to believe that a patent would allow any form of wireless shifting to be claimed by one manufacturer - as opposed to them being allowed to patent the specific tech that allowed them to go wireless

Reading this, patents do not sound like a blocker.

weโve tested X but thereโs no demand for it
That's what Shimano say about everything they are struggling with.
-
• #3213
They're not Campag.
I'm sure if they release a wireless system it will be superior to other offerings.
-
• #3214
Any theories as to why not? To be completely honest, I've never really been impressed with Etap.
In it's short availability, I had more come in needing some sort of adjustment/attention than Shimano's offering.I know Patents aren't really an issue, but is it something to do with signal protocols? reliability?

Shimano philosophy. They won't release wireless just because the market demands it (in spite of their unconvincing protestation). It will have to be better than Di2 in some way beyond just getting rid of the stupid bird's nest of wires and junction boxes, it will have to be indigenous (Shimano really hate paying licence fees), and it will have to be portable to Ultegra at least, and ideally 105, which means it has to be producible at a much lower price than eTap

So it's a case of making the whole system streamlined and maximizing profit through that. Makes sense I suppose.

The SRAM patent doesn't strictly cover Wireless shifting, it's more covering a battery mounted directly on a derailleur. Shimano have a few patent docs out there that have interesting things like dynamo jockey wheels to charge the derailleur directly, whether this is feasible is another story altogether.

Decided to set the fron mech of my Etap with a Rotor 3DF crank. All set perfectly. Then remembered the lower limit screw fouls on the crank arm. Luckily removing the screw completely is fine so long as I remember where I put it for safe keeping.

I'd like them to first sort out the shitty mess that is the stem mounted junction boxes they think are okay.
Madison have now had my 6870 shifter for six weeks. Got my LBS to send it back because the switch was sticky and not returning on shifts. They can't seem to get an answer. Currently rolling around on a heavy winter bike with 10 speed Tiagra like a caveman.
On the plus side, it will feel like I've got a new bike when they get it back to me/I give up and buy a shifter off eBay.

Has anyone on here successfully run 11-30 cassette on a short cage 6870? And more specifically, also with a 52/34 up front?
-
• #3221
52/36 or 52/34? 52/34 would be ambitious regardless of the cassette.
-
• #3222
Oh, and yes, I have run 11-30 albeit with a 6770 not a 6870. It was fine.
-
• #3223
I don't know what that is but I used 50/34 with 11-32 short cage Di2 Ultegra. Depends on the bike.
-
• #3224
I'm running 52/34 with a 28 cassette at the moment, which works fine. Just wondering if I can get 30 on the back without fucking things up, or wasting money on finding out

I'm thinking of doing 1x Di2 with Shimano XT Di2 rear and Climber Switch on Trp Hylex.
I want to have it as clean as possible, so is it possible to extend and route the climber switch down through the Di2 port down to the 2 port junction box that is inside the frame?
Not if it halves the battery life and/or has any impact on reliability.
