I do know what you mean though. I'm about to install an MTB crankset. Steel bike loaded, with really rocky/scree terrain makes for sketchy work climbing.
@edscoble I'm running that with a 44 up front. Sometimes you do need the smaller ring if you want to climb seated. 46-30 would be the sweet spot.
I want something like that SRAM double MTB chainset that have 42/28 which is spot on, very hard to find an MTB double that go more than 40t in the big ring.
